Last month when Fairfax launched their iPad app for the Sydney Morning Herald, the only way you could get the app was to get a copy of the weekend paper as well. Well, now it seems you can get the digital version without killing trees.
It’ll cost you $18 for 28 days worth of newspapers on your iPad. It’s a pretty big improvement on the previous option – although any option that didn’t involve a physical paper would be a big improvement.
Will this convince any iPad owners to take the plunge?

Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 5:28 PMGah, 18 bucks a month? I mean I know that is less that $1 a paper BUT I would like to be rewarded for not using paper and for spending money on a tablet.
Plus im not gonna read the paper on my iPad every day. Mainly use brower at work, so weekend only plan would be nice.

Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 5:54 PMI’d take the plunge if it was $7 for 7-day e-edition access — $18 is too much. I would be happy to put up with iAds to subsidise the cost.
It’s not that I don’t appreciate quality journalism – I’m a journalist myself – I just don’t want to pay any more than that.
I love the e-only edition though — I’ve been waiting for something this for a long time. SMH please come up with a better pricing model!

the cost of the e-edition is the same as the 3 day print including full e-edition. you would think a discount for not getting print would be in order!

As soon as I see that table. I run. If i can go to the shop and buy the paper on any day that i please. I just want to do the same with a download. It doesn’t need to be any harder than that. Surely we could download a free app and then open it in the morning and see a nice big button saying download/buy today’s paper. Done! Too easy impulse buy. Work it out you dumbasses

Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 8:11 PMNot bloody likely! I was one of the suckers who signed up for the weekend print bundle when E edition only was not available as an option. SMH did not deliver me one print edition. No one at SMH could even begin to help me, ad I signed up through the iPad app. Hopeless, eventually I got a refund. Now that the E edition only sub is avail, which is what I wanted in the first place…it’s the same price as the print sub! Are they on crack? I will pay no more than $10 a month for the E edition. I would be interested to hear what others are willing to pay…

Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 4:55 PM$2 per week would do it for me. Or, I think I would hapily pay a dollar for the Saturday issue, which is all I usually buy in hard copy anyway.
