Samsung Claims 3D Victory – Has 88% Of US 3D TV Sales

Despite worrying rumblings that we’re already seeing the latest 3D trend explode amid consumer apathy for the current things-poking-out-of-the-screen gimmick, Samsung is remaining upbeat – thanks to taking an 88 per cent share of recent US sales of 3D TVs.

Claiming to have shifted one million sets in the space of six months, Samsung says its aggressive early launch plans saw it take that 88.3 per cent share of the US market for 3D TVs between March and July of 2010. Globally, Samsung says it’ll sell around 3.4 million 3D sets this year – and the US will account for a massive 66 per cent of global demand for its 3D screens. While the novelty remains. [Samsung]

Another way to spin this: will Samsung be responsible for the premature death of 3D? From my reading of plenty of reviews, Samsung’s 3D efforts have been fairly underwhelming while Panasonic (and sometimes Sony) has been praised for making 3D more worthwhile. If 88% of people are buying a set with sub-par 3D implementation, that could affect the demand for 3D as a whole.

It would be a real shame for 3D to die because Samsung aggressively marketed an inferior product, especially when they’ve done such great things for the LCD/LED market. Remember Samsung, with great power comes great responsibility. Someone get some Spider-Man comics into their offices, stat!

Having seen 3D LED LCD from Sony, LG and Samsung, none of them come close to Panasonic 3D plasma on such fundamental things as ghosting. Have seen it on every LED LCD I have seen, yet not on Panasonic plasmas. I haven’t seen LG or Samsung plasmas though so am not sure whether it is the manufacturer or the technology.
