Rumour: AppleTV Renamed iTV, Will Have Apps But No 1080p Playbackfor

According to an Engadget source – the same one that said the next AppleTV would be a $US99 unit with iPhone guts – Apple’s next TV device will be rebranded the iTV. And it will have apps, but it won’t play 1080p video.

That last bit has apparently been a point of contention for Apple, but the new unit’s internals – reportedly an A4 CPU and 16GB of flash storage – can’t quite handle 1080p or 1080i playback. The source says that the iTV will bring apps to televisions, though it’s unclear if those will include apps designed for the iPad or iPhone.

While the idea of apps on the TV seems like a grand breakthrough in (d)evolution of the Couch Potato, it’d certainly be a bummer if Apple’s renewed push toward the living room couldn’t play our biggest and best files. [Engadget]

    flash storage….

are they batshit insane? for a media device??

this, of course, is absolute fail… just be interesting to see whether the masses still fall for it… lured in by apps… judging by the success of the first one, I’d say no. not when all their games consoles already do this, better.

What kind of morons do they have working in their tech departments at apple? No seriously. Who is it that stands there and says “yeah, this antenna design is f***ed but were goign to use it anyways” or “hey, let’s make a media box for a tv but it can’t have 1080p… we’ll sting em’ more for that with an upgrade and then we’ll market the upgrade as if we have pioneered 1080p technology” it’d be like ferrari sticking a datsun 120b motor in their cars, all show, no go.

Hang on kids, iTunes doesn’t have 1080p content so what are you bickering about?

Oh! Having to use itunes. What a fantastic idea!

AppleTV is still a failure of a product, now even more so. Just let it die already.

As for HTPCs, why anyone would bother when there is such a large range of GOOD HD media players available is beyond comprehension.

It all comes down to price, content, and ux. If they can get those three right on a device that does clean 1080i and/or 720p they’ll be in a safe place imho.

I know apple thinks they can add an ‘i’ to the start of everything and make it theirs.. But what happens in the UK where there are iTV tv stations? Is apple going to take them to court so they can use the name iTV (I believe that is what happened with the iPhone)..
