Calling! In Gmail!. It’s been rumoured for a little bit, but now it’s here. Merged. You can make phone calls from Gmail (without going to your GV page).
How’s it going to work? You can make calls in Gmail, and then talk directly to your computer. Google says the call quality is “really good”, even just using the standard mic and speaker in the laptop you have. They claim they have really good echo cancellation – the same one they use on the video/voice chat in Gmail.

Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 12:47 PMThe option came up for me, and I was able to click on a link, get to a download page and grab the installer.
However… the installer fails with an error, so I cant actually check or confirm that this is going to work in Australia :(
Anyone else had more luck than me?

Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 2:27 PMIf only Google Voice was available in Aus .. then we could RECEIVE calls in Gmail too.
Also, I’d love to be able to CLICK a phone number on a webpage and have Gmail call it straight from the browser.

Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 5:40 PMWell, it just worked for me :)
I called my mobile number, and it rang here… I’ll have to double check rates and things to see if it’s worth using over a normal VoIP account, but it definitely let me dial my aussie mobile number.

Friday, August 27, 2010 at 10:51 AMDeff works pretty well, just called my home phone from my iMac. Anyone know if it’s free to call Aussie to Aussie? You phone starts off with 10c credit and it doesn’t look like it costed me anything to place the call.
