Otherwise known as a water bear or moss piglet, tardigrades are tiny eight-legged microorganisms that live in water and “walk” similarly to a bear. Both this and the virtual pet live in a spherical brass enclosure: the e-pet on an LED screen, the tardigrade on a prepared slide. The virtual organism is modelled after the water bear, and caring for it simultaneously cares for the real life version (for instance, feeding your pet feeds the tardigrade with a suspension of atomised moss particles, yum). The avatar’s movements are even partially triggered by its living companion.
You can also email the Tardigotchi, which turns on a heating lamp inside or visit his Facebook page. For more details, check out the video. [Wired]

Friday, July 30, 2010 at 4:01 PMIm at work in a toy shop right now, we put our tamagotchis in the bargain bin last week, they dont sell anymore.
But this sound really strange. Is it an actual live organism? Cos people might complain about ‘animal rights’ or something

Friday, July 30, 2010 at 11:04 PMOh! I’m actually doing an assignment on survival mechanisms in animals for biology now. The water bear is one of the hardest things to kill.

Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 3:15 AMit’s a microorganism that tests have shown may be the only animal that can actually survive in space.
I don’t think it’s very easy to kill! And I doubt there’d be human rights issues, they don’t really apply to microorganisms.
