Quake 2 Test: HTC Desire Vs Samsung Galaxy S

Both run Android. Both have lightning-fast processors (the Galaxy S a Hummingbird/Power VR, the Desire a Snapdragon/Adreno). Both can play Quake 2. But which handles better?

See the side-by-side comparison below. I won’t give too many clues away, but I’ve got to say that I’m pretty disappointed with the outcome. I’m like a proud parent who expected much greater things of her child – even if the initial tests suggested one day I’d be sobbing into my hanky, wishing I’d backed the other horse. Sorry, I’m so upset, I’m mixing up my metaphors.

Got a Motorola Droid? Then you’ll be wanting to see how it plays Quake III, right? Right. [Android Central Forums via Android Central]

Does a Nexus one with Froyo yield better results than a Desire with Eclair?

It was a given the hummingbird processors was faster in graphics than the Snapdragon…

Good it’s not just me. I love the technology in the phone, but it’s just not as classy as an iPhone4. Why can’t they make a sexy Android phone? :P

    holy balls!!

    I’ll take eight!

also, was the quake port in java or c?
because if it was java it will see a “5 to 6 times” increase in cpu performance with 2.2, if its c, it won’t be any different. either way, this was mainly a graphics test… the galaxy S can do 800×480 at 60fps quake? the Wii can barely do that!!!

on the other hand… I would have expected the iphone 3GS to be able to do this. although it would only be doing it at 480×320

Without looking at the video I already knew the desire is going to suck at the graphics department. Qualcomm is a company that yet again fails to deliver decent 3D graphics. Watching the video only confirmed this. That is why my next android phone will not have a qualcomm chipset in it. Not even snapdragon, unless they remedy their graphics problem. Otherwise, TI/Samsung FTW!!!

um, its obvious that the desire is using the software driver. There is no filtering as with the galaxy. It’s a bit misleading.

When the game works with the desire’s opengl drivers it will look basically the same.

Not really surprising at all. Qualcomm chipsets graphics performance has been complained about for literally years. The most surpising thing is HTC keep using them despite their dog-turd reputation. It’s well and good to claim a 1Gz CPU except that like in every Qualcomm chipset, the CPU get bogged down having to do everything. HTC do some great stuff (I loved my Touch Pro) but until they ditch the Qualcomm boat-anchor they’ll never get the the kudos they deserve.
