It seems that the members of the Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church aren’t very happy about the San Diego Comic-Con. According to them, it’s a gathering of lost souls who are obsessively worshipping false idols like Batman:
Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent – so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.
Members of the church intend on staging a 45-minute protest during one of the least busy days of the convention in order to get everyone back on the right track. [Blastr via Nerd Bastards]

Friday, July 16, 2010 at 9:47 AMI for one know that God loves nerds… Not sure which God they’re refering to, certainly not mine…
Simon Reidy
Friday, July 16, 2010 at 9:55 AMYet another reason I’m proud to be an atheist. These are the same people that protest at fallen soldiers funerals, proclaiming they died because “God hates fags” and it’s punishment for Americans not condemning them. They are pure f’n evil.

Friday, July 16, 2010 at 10:07 AMThere was a great doco about them. They had one of their little 5 year olds holding a “God hates fags” sign at one of their funeral protests and the journalist asked the kid what a fag was and of course the kid had no idea. The old patriarch that runs their little cult is such a tyrannical, evil old f**cker tho… truly hope he does something illegal and gets thrown in jail so the younger members of the family can break free.

Friday, July 16, 2010 at 11:05 AMProblem being that no amount of deprogramming could fix the members of the Westboro Baptist Church.

You’d think so but surprisingly a number of his family members have left and been shunned by the remaining members. And from the doco I saw it seemed some of the younger girls that are getting exposure to the outside world at university are kinda conflicted about the whole thing on the inside, even though they don’t admit it. I reckon it wouldn’t take much of a push to convince them.

Friday, July 16, 2010 at 10:00 AMI dont see what the fuss is all about. The bible and comic books are really very similar, both include fictional stories and fictional characters. Atleast comic books dont market themselves as non-fiction, unlike the bible.

Friday, July 16, 2010 at 10:02 AM“…so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry”
And all that praying to your gods has done what, exactly? Two hands working does more than a thousand hands clasped in prayer.
Batman & Superman as idols isn’t so bad at all. They have rock solid, unwavering morals, a desire to help all people for no reward in return & do it because they want to – not because they’ve been told they could stay forever at Hotel Paradiso at the end.

Non-Fundamentalist Christian
Friday, July 16, 2010 at 10:18 AMFar out! Christian’s with no clue really annoy me. Romans 9:13 doesn’t say anything about hating nerds!
“Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” The passage, in context, is talking about something very challenging, which all Christian’s have to deal with at some point, predestination.
From verse 11: “Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God’s purpose in election might stand: not by works but by him who calls—she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”"
The link between “God Hates Nerds” and Romans 9 is non-existent!! Honestly. They should at least do some reading before they make these statements.
I don’t see Comic-Con as idolatry. People are allowed to have interests!
It’s Christians like these that give us a bad name. In fact, at my church, I’ve run a LAN to raise money for the Black Saturday bushfires, and I plan on running more later in the year.

Friday, July 16, 2010 at 2:32 PMI wouldn’t go so far as to call the Westbro Baptist Church members, “Christian”.
They’re like the asshole extremists of the Christian religion. They take abstract verses from the bible and twist them to preach hatred.
Much like any other extremist religion.
Troy MacDonald
Monday, July 26, 2010 at 9:51 PMExactly, these extremists are what people see as christians, then think we’re all like that. Same as catholics, people see them with their rules and strict lifestyle and think thats what believing in God means.
The ‘religious’ nuts in the world, or people who take things way too far or strict are scaring people away and making people hate God, when its the people that have ruined His image.

Here we go again… one lot of misguided people putting the hate on us nerds and another lot putting the hate on us Christians.
Seriously, we aren’t all that bad. Like every demographic of people, we have people that have some funny ideas but you’ll find that where ever you go.

Friday, July 16, 2010 at 12:38 PMThe christians, just like all the other religions, have fanatics. Fanatics are pretty much always bad.
Viddy
Friday, July 16, 2010 at 1:42 PM…he would be better channelling his energy into something that actually causes harm, ‘God hates pedofiles’ or ‘God hates murderers’.
What a waste of time. If he was a nerd and actually used the ‘super-highway’ instead of a local ‘freeway’ he might even get his message to about 10 million more people rather standing outside in the cold like a total douche-bag.

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 4:01 PMBut, haven’t anyone realized yet that the word “nerds” is not on the original picture, but rather “photoshoped” into the image?.
Folks… that image is a fake. I don’t know what the original billboard might have had written on it, but the “nerds” part is digitally included.
In fact, I’ll go on a hunch here, but I think it’s Arial Black…
However, if the statemet is true and these people really declare thar “nerds” are hated by God… well… don’t hate this people, just pity them, “for they don’t know what they do”.

Monday, January 31, 2011 at 5:34 AMGod Hates Nerds?? Which version of the Bible is that in? Unless he’s citing ROMULANS 9:13, which reads, “death to the Federation and all their pompous Starfleet geeks.”
