12m Optimus Prime Transforms Beijing Skyline

Visitors to China’s Green Dream Park – not far from the 2008 Olympics’ “Bird’s Nest” stadium – are currently being greeted by a 12m tall, six-ton Optimus Prime made from five truckloads of car and truck spare parts. Take that, Gundam.

The park opens on Friday and features other environmentally friendly attractions designed to get visitors thinking green. Of course were I face to face with this behemoth, I’d only be thinking a) how far away is Megatron, and b) where’s the nearest eco-conscious hiding place? [CNET]

And what’s a bet they don’t actually have the licensing rights to use the design? Bloody pirates.

(For the record, I’m Asian, in case anybody thinks I’m being racist.)

Never would have guessed, with the name “Wong” :P

But seriously, who cares? Licensing only gets in the way. Western civilisation has this dirty kind of greed that stops a lot of great things because no-one is making money off it.

Strictly speaking, being asian does not preclude you from being a racist – even to folks of your own ethnicity. That being said, I don’t think you’re being racist here.

THAT being said, you’d have a better position if Western fair use provisions were more flexible than they are – I’d like to see an effort like this classed under creative commons for artistic merit, because it’s so damn pretty and from the sound of it the artist is not making money off it.
