Steve Jobs 2003 Trashing Steve Jobs 2010

Tablets are great for “a bunch of rich guys who want to have a third computer”. That’s just one of the many pearls coming out of Steve Jobs’ mouth in this 2003 interview. A must watch before the WWDC’10 keynote.

Ah, the simpler times in which the Personal Computer was everything for Apple and no other device would ever take its place. I’m sure WWDC 2010 attendees – who will be almost entirely focused in creating iPhone and iPad apps – will appreciate the irony. [All Things D]

Jobs is a marketing guy – a good one. I don’t agree with Apple’s take it all, no hostages philosophy, but in this case he is merely reflecting the tagline from McCann Erickson Advertising… The Truth Well Told.

So what? People aren’t permitted to change their minds EVER? or alter their personal viewpoint based on the CURRENT state of the rapidly evolving world technology, the market and people’s needs?

Steve was exactly right when he said that SEVEN YEARS ago, but times have changed… Tablets were next to useless and far too expensive back then, that’s why the market never took off for them. Today’s technology, affordability and peoples needs, however, are different… and so should peoples view on the suitability of tablet devices for personal computing be.

    This is NOT “irony”.

he is exactly right about handwriting recognition.

if handwriting was better than typing, why would they have invented the typewriter?
I don’t know why people keep pushing handwriting recognition…

remember two things have changed that might not have been so readily predictable:

that is the explosion in cheap, powerful, mobile hardware.
and the explosion in wireless internet, that was, up until recently, also cheap.

and lets not forget, their idea of the PC remaining the central hub is still something they persist with, with the ipod/phone/pad still needing to be drip fed through it. hopefully they will eventually discover cloud computing though, and internet will get cheap.
