I Accidentally Broke My iPhone 4 On Day One

I woke up this morning overcome with anticipation, just like the 599,999 other people who pre-ordered the iPhone 4. I pre-ordered my phone through Best Buy, and it proved to be a simple and easy process. Obvious “foreshadowing” alert.

Unlike Apple, Best Buy didn’t have any lines wrapping around their store, having staggered their iPhone pickups to lessen the load on their employees. I had my phone for about two hours prior to everyone else in the office – two extra hours of blissful “Haha!”s until everyone else finally picked their own up. I fell in love with this phone immediately. The hardware is unparalleled, it is beautifully designed and the glass back really does look stunning (when it’s not shattered), and iOS4 runs like a dream with the new processor.

I volunteered to test the phone all day, doing reception tests, processor tests and just about anything else to put phone into numbers on paper. Not only did I volunteer because I had the fortune of picking my phone up before everyone else, but also because by doing these tests I got to play with my new toy all day (as opposed to playing with my new toy all day and being reprimanded for doing no work because I was playing with my new phone all day.)

The final test I performed was to see how well the reception held up while travelling by car. I took a cab from the Giz office in Soho up to Times Square, testing the call quality and comparing it to the 3GS. I got out in Times Square, and everyone was flabbergasted that the AT&T network didn’t drop either call for over a half an hour.

Everything was great in my little world – I was in Times Square with my shiny new iPhone 4. And then the inevitable happened – or what, I imagine, we’ll come to think of as the inevitable. I tried to do the little trick where you hold the iPhone 4 just with your left hand and all your bars drop away until you have no service. Note to readers: Don’t do this in a crowded intersection during rush hour. I felt my phone slip from my awkwardly positioned fingers – it hung for a moment at the end of my ear bud cord, like a bungee jumper moments before his cord snaps – and then I painfully watched as it tumbled over the curb in a sudden whirl of annihilation. The back glass panel shattered, and so did my heart. OK, that may be a little melodramatic… but I am really upset.

I shattered my phone hours after buying it, in the line of duty no less. If only Apple decided to make the back of the phone steel. Or rubber. Or leather. Or not fucking glass, the most shatterable material known to man. But hey, I’m trying to think optimistically here; at least it wasn’t the front screen that cracked, and the look gives it character… I guess.

I am surprised people didnt see this coming there is a difference between strength and tougness when it comes to materials. Ceramics such as glass while stong if you try to pull them from either end have minimal ductility therefore a good solid wack will shatter them, which is what toughness is actually a measure of.

Everything I’ve read points to needing a full back cover for it, not just the bumper…which sucks, I was looking forward to not having to treat my iphones back cover like it was royalty.

I think I disagree with you there (about the need for a back cover).

If you had a bumper on it, the only reason the back cover would hit the ground if you dropped it if it were on to uneven ground (not concrete) and it hit something pointing up, like a rock.

Otherwise the bumper’s little ridges will protect it as needed.

yes I agree with you,However you need to install an inviable shield for the back of your iphone 4 “as reported it scratchable ” otherwise you may need the cover if you are going outside the home and specially if you hold the phone in your hand most of the time.

I think apple really has gone to far with its ‘form impeding function’ ideology here.

More likely their ‘double the glass means double the profits on repairs!’ idea!

Bingo. So what…they make the back metal like the article says and he drops it again and this time it lands on the front face. Guess, what, it’s broken again.

The problem isn’t the material here, its the user not being able to handle a phone securely. Glass might shatter but it probably has other advantages over various other materials too. It’s a trade off.

Call me paranoid, but the first thing I ever did when I bought my original iPhone 3G was put a film over the front to protect it from scratches and then put it in a case to protect it if it ever slipped.
A few years later you can take the case and the film off and save for a little bit of dirt in the switches, speakers and plug areas it looks brand new.

When I upgrade to the iPhone 4 guess what the first thing I’ll be doing is!

Could this be a case of revenge journalism? Didn’t get a unit to test out so had to make out a “0.5m” drop shatters glass panel. Hmmmm…..

I might put an order in for a protective cover now…we’re not even about to pre-order the dame thing yet and I’ve already decided that “naked” is not the best way for this phone to go.

Personally, I’ll be spending more time looking at the front, so I don’t really care that much…

(Besides, the number of times I’ve drop my 3G in it’s protective case just means that the 4g is going to discover gravity sooner rather then later)

Haha! And everyone said those ‘tests’ run a few weeks ago on the shock resistance of the iPhone 4 were faked.

I agree eryhyhdfhhaha you should have known that buying Apple u would be setting yourself up for a disaster and disappointment and the retarded idea of a glass back iphone 4 just proves how stupid Apple really are. We all know that it is just to make twice the amount on repair profits. Plus they are 300% overpriced ccompared to how much they cost to make, distribute, advertise and supply software. If u really want a phone go android. SE X10i

“Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever.”

Apple uses terms like stiffer, harder, and ultra-durable.

How do those terms factor in relation to materials?

I believe the advantages of the glass oitweigh the disadvantages of using any other material. Everyones saying the glass just adds to form not function but i find the glass touch screen smoother fo use and glides more easily. It adds sharpness and clarity. No point complaining about glass on the back because you have just as much chance dropping it on the face where it would effect functionality. Being more scratch resistant as opposed to smash resistant for the less clumsy is definetly a plus. Its tempting to use this phone naked as its so sexy but for the clumsy i guess a cover or clear film is essential. Perhaps apple could have also released a plastic version just to shut the haters up although i’d still go for the glass.
