Condoms With Teeth Fight Rape In South Africa

Over 30,000 Rape-Axe condoms are being handed out free at South Africa’s World Cup. While they won’t stop rape, the condoms (worn by women) have jagged-teeth inside to tear penises up and can only be removed by doctors.

Sounds grim, but then I imagine rape isn’t any fun for the woman either. The inventor, Dr Sonnet Ehlers, was inspired to create the painful condom after she met a woman who’d been raped. The woman apparently told Ehlers “if only I had teeth down there”, which encouraged her to look at ways to make men regret their actions.

Women fearful of being raped can insert the Rape-Axe condom inside themselves like a diaphragm or tampon. If her worst fears come true, and a man attempts to rape her, the Rape-Axe’s inside hooks attach themselves to the penis and don’t come off, instead getting even tighter and stopping the man from being able to urinate. The only way to remove it is by seeing a doctor – which will obviously help with prosecution.

After the World Cup, Ehlers will be selling the Rape-Axe condoms for $US2 each. [Rape-Axe via Jezebel]

As much as I detest the reprehensible behaviour of, “from well known evidence” a huge amount of men, in quite a few African countries. I can’t help but wonder what someone who was willing to rape in the first place, would do to the woman once he realised his predicament. I can see a lot more life threatening injuries and deaths coming about because of this. It would be nice to think that this would work, and honestly the hatred I feel towards these animals notwithstanding, I think this will cause more problems than it solves.

Perhaps a way around this problem would be to number and register each individual device. At $2.00 a pop this shouldn’t be that hard to do, and that way the law would know who the mongrel raped, beat or murdered. Just a thought

How long before we hear about the first case where a woman meets a guy she likes and forgets to take this thing out?

Nodeity makes a really good point, but i have to say (as a woman who has narrowly escaped rape before) i would rather have that thing rip the would-be rapist to shreds and have it guaranteed that he be caught OR die a slow and painful death (either way, can never do it to anyone else) even if it meant he beats me to death for it, than be raped, possibly be beaten to death anyway afterwards and he escapes prosecution. And this thing will as least serve as a deterrent. hopefully.

Thanks’ for the back slap, but I really don’t see this thing working! Firstly it’s very expensive in African terms, so only the relatively well off are going to be able afford it. Secondly once the word gets around that women are using these things, the word will spread like lightning and the first thing any rapist will do is check first. I’m sorry but I think it will do more harm than good! The only way to stop these animals is to change their culture, and that’s not going to happen any time soon.!! Catchya

So basically what you mean, Nodeity, is that ‘We sit back and do nothing, because it’s just the way things are’. How about a punishment that the rapist ‘can-not’ escape, like stoning him to his last breath ? I’m sure when the news spreads and ‘would-be’ rapists learn of this, they would just ‘stop’ raping. Even if you don’t get to catch each and everyone, the fear would be enough deterrent. The answer stares at people in their faces but they are dumbfounded “How about we change culture, how about we educate the rapist, how about a school for rapist rehabilitation, how about a cool condom, how about a button that sends non-lethal electric jolts to the rapist, how about fluffy bunnies for rapists’. But dare we not punish the rapist because that would be inhumane. lol

        Petty western society.

I believe if it works for women then I should say Eureka for women.
