Watch This Massive Nuclear Cooling Tower Get Blown To Smithereens

The K Cooling Tower at the Savannah River Site in the US sat unused for nearly 20 years thanks to the end of the Cold War, yet it still required maintenance and upkeep (read: taxpayer money). So they blew it up.

But why wait so long to demolish this 137m tall, 105m wide structure? Well, this is the poky US government we’re talking about, but more seriously in this case it was all about a lack of funding.

Only a recent influx of funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was enough to justify the demolition, which happened earlier this week. [Kuriositas via Neatorama]
