This $US20,000 Empress wood surfboard beast is a pricey piece of art and completely functional. It’s also nearly one of a kind – Roy Stewart says only 50 of these handcrafted beauties will be made. [Olo Surfer via Born Rich]
Few points. I surf. I have no idea what the curvey thing behind the fin is or does. The board would be priced that for a few reasons. (1) timber boards are inherently more expensive given the cost (money & time) associated with the material (i.e. wood) is higher than current inputs (man-made foam). (2) A lot of thought must go into shaping a surfboard to do with where and how it will be surfed, the types of waves surfed, and a whole raft of hydrodynamics to consider. (3) its one of only 50, or more so one of a kind given that it is wood so i imagine they will all look slightly different.
and last but not least! (4) its primary function is as an art piece. and we all know art is farrrken expensive for no apparent reason.
