Unbelievably, Opera Mini For iPhone Approved By Apple

Holy crap. Against our wildest expectations, Apple just approved Opera Mini browser for the iPhone, and it’ll be in the App Store within 24 hours. Original iPhone users should be reallllllly happy right now.

Opera Mini App approved for the App Store
Oslo, Norway – April 13, 2010 – Opera today announced its popular mobile browser, Opera Mini has been approved for iPhone and iPod touch on the App Store. Opera Mini will be available as a free download within 24 hours, depending on market.

Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fast mobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved page loading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network. Surfing the Web with the Opera Mini App on iPhone and iPod touch will also help users save money because of its data compression capabilities. This will hold especially true while the user is incurring roaming charges.

“We are delighted to offer iPhone and iPod touch users a great browsing experience with the Opera Mini App,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “This app is another step toward Opera’s goal of bringing the Web to more people in more places.”

The Opera Mini App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.

I just tried it and it looks like a cutdown version of safari. Pages don’t render propoerly (similar to desktop web broswers) and has already put me off from using/testing further.

I guess that’s why Apple allowed this. They didn’t see any threats from Opera.

Yep, it works. Just downloaded it, but the zoom feature is pretty dodgey feeling. It’s either not zoomed in or zoomed in. Only two states.

So far it seems to be really fast in comparison to Safari. It’s just a shame that it isn’t detected as an ‘iPhone browser’ and redirected to the touch designed pages. Standard mobile pages look so boring.

I like it. Page rendering is very fast over 3G on Optus. Scaling is certainly not as smooth as Safari when viewing a full website, but as soon as you zoom in, text looks great and panning around sites is super fast and silky smooth.

The find text in page feature will certainly come in handy too.

Give ‘em credit, the page load times on the go are fantastic. Nice and zippy. I’d like a bit more play in the zoom but that may be due to being so used to double tap and pinching.

    Further observations:

This is awesome for viewing large sites that usually default to mobile versions. Can’t believe how fast the desktop version of Facebook is.

Tab browsing is WAY fast than Safari. You can also instantaneously switch back and forward between previously visited sites with no lag.

Good start. Fast loads, tabs look nice, but big readability issues.

Gmail and google reader both remind me of being ony n95 in 2005. Can google make their apps “see” this as an iPhone now that they have a browser profile? Can’t see myself using this unless I have some super big page I need on a 3g connection.

Let’s hope they keep improving it.

Great browser for 3g iPhone, scrolling around large sites is a lot smoother. Love the tabbed browsing, pages load in the background!! The only flaw I can see is Javascript driven sites like Google reader don’t work well at all.

I have no idea how so many of you are praising it. It’s terrible. The rendering of pages is blocky and poorly scaled. Navigation is painful. It feels like an old windows CE version of Opera. For me (on the shitty Optus 3G network) load times are far worse too when compared to Safari.

Really? I am using Optus’s crappy 2G network and I must say its much faster.
