Switch on your PS3 and you’ll see Sony has pushed through the 3.21 firmware update a little early. Remember, this update removes the ability to run other operating systems, such as Linux.
Not installing it will mean you can’t play games and Blu-rays demanding a system running 3.21, and you also won’t be able to connect to PSN – which would be a major bummer for a lot of people.
Hacker Geohot is trying to figure out a patch that’ll keep the ability to run Linux, while also not encountering problems with PSN/Blu-ray/games support, but we’re not sure on how soon that’ll be.

Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 11:39 PMWhy is there always an outrage among the tech savy people when stuff like this ( pls don’t ask me to explain what ‘this’ is ) happens.
Who cares if you can’t run Linux on ps3, I bought it to play games. If I want to use Linux I will run it on desktop/laptop not on ps3.
Play some games on ps3 and come write a blog on yor Linux desktop and tell me how much fun u had.

Because it is an outrage. Just because you don’t use a feature of the console doesn’t mean everybody shouldn’t. Eg; I don’t use the ‘statistic’ functions on my calculator so calculators should have them removed because statistics are not fun.
The fact is Sony promoted the PS3 running Linux as a selling point. People paid for the PS3 with this as an expected feature. To have Sony arbitarily cripple functions on the PS3 which people paid for is straight out fraud.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 11:08 AMwhy aren’t more people up in arms about this? A company removing a feature from a product by firmware update! This was a selling point for some people.
Imagine when 3D TVs become common place and then they kill 3D support on your TV all of a sudden (it is software based after all). Who cares if you never really watched 3D you would and should be pissed.
Forcing an “upgrade” is wrong. Shame on you Sony.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 11:57 PMPretty poor form on Sony’s part.
I dont use Linux and dont intend to but if Sony promoted the ability to use Linux as a selling point I can guarantee that they will be forced to re introduce it. (atleast in Australia).

Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 9:20 AMSony removing this feature is the same as Toyota removing the braking feature from their cars. There was a huge fuss about that so why not in this case.

Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 5:36 AMThis update killed my playstation. Sony threatened to cut off all features unless you updated, which didn’t bother me because I didn’t use the OS. but since the update I can’t play any discs at all! (and btw my playstation had worked perfect beforehand, for 3 years) Sony are refusing all responsibility for this, of course, and are labelling it purely coincidental. They are now trying to charge me 131 pounds to replace it with a second hand model. So yes i believe people, who have paid 3-400 pound for their consol, have right to be pissed when Sony bullies them into downloadin a pointless update which removes functionality, and has a potential to destroy their expensive hardware!
