iPad DJs Show You How It’s Done (Literally And Figuratively)

Cut past the nerdy hipster schtick, and – if you’re not trying to DIY – the technical orientation. Starting at 5:20, these guys bust a surprisingly palatable mashup of Prince, Vampire Weekend, G’N'R, Eurythmics and… I Dream of Jeannie.

We’ve seen other iPad DJs, and God knows we’re going to see a lot more, in every style. But I like how this duo explains the main point of their novelty twist: To go wireless, and do their mixin’ away from the computer. As one of the Andrews so cogently puts it, “I don’t think you could ever do this with vinyl.” Go ahead, try this at home. [Thanks Andrew Andrew!]

They have a lot of vinyl but have clearly turned their backs on the art of DJ’ing! I play 2 vinyl and 2 CDJ’s at the same time and it has taken me years to get there!

iPad as a midi controller is a very cool idea, but with all of the possibilities a large touch surface could deliver, a ‘mock’ mixer, laid out just about like a real mixer, is pretty underwhelming.

What about manipulation of sound using a metaphor OTHER than virtual vinyl? Or a single, portable surface that emulates an MPC AND a Kaoss Pad?
