Samsung’s Not-So-Mysterious New Windows Phone 7 Handset

12:10PM March 16, 2010 | John Herrman

We’ve become acquainted with Windows Phone 7 handsets from Asus and LG, but during this morning’s demo, we saw a new one from Samsung. So, what do we know about this – or any – of the handsets we’ve seen so far?

Not much! We know that it probably conforms to Microsoft’s minimum requirements for Windows Phone 7, which means: a multitouch screen WVGA screen; an accelerometer; 5-megapixel camera; FM radio; 256MB of RAM; 8GB of internal storage. Internally, it has to be roughly the same phone as the other two we’ve seen.

Externally, it’s nearly indistinguishable from the Omnia HD, which we reviewed back in August:

At the time, this phone was a piece of hardware pornography with a disappointing UI. With Windows Phone 7, though, anyone would have to give it a second look. Here’s a thought, though: We know that Microsoft is clamping down on what it considers acceptable hardware for Windows Phone 7, and we’ve talked about what that means in broad terms. But what about hardware lust? The iPhone’s done a great deal to take people’s focus away from hardware, and phones like the Pre ride on their features, not their spec sheets. So I guess the hardcore hardware nerds will be stuck with Android now? [Slashgear]

Lets be realistic here, the iphone has been the best phone/device I’ve ever had in my hand or pocket.

    It just feels good.

While I agree there can issues with taking calls, I usually user the speaker functionality anyway.

If microsoft (to it’s partners) are really serious about getting me away from it, they need to provide me with something that is as sexy or sexier. My wife should be jealous of it!

I’m sorry to say, that at the moment, I’ve not seen anything that really grabs my attention.

Lets face it, the iphone is plagued with technical issues, under size camera, less then adequate speaker, but people still love the thing!

Take some lessons and plan very, very carefully, the os is only a small part of the purchasing choice here!

yeah iv seen what an iphone does to your a persons soul. it rots it and steels all its money.

iv had an omnia i900 for a year and a half now and there is nothing i want to do that it cant and if it cant i jusst change it so it can.

the main difference between my samsung and the iphone is that iv dropped it (from a decent hight onto concrete)/steped on it/reformated it/changed all the button functions and its never even blinked. works as well now as when i got it.

iv seen iphones screens shatter when sneezed on. and everything you want to do apple charges you for and dont even have the decency to give you all the normal phone functions as standard.

atm samsung make the best phones in the world because they understand that when something is important enough to be in your pocket 24/7 its important enough to be indistructable and reliable and versitile.

and if you dont like the omnias windows there is always the HD which is brillient.
