If you were hoping to use your mobile phone as a remote trigger flash for your Nikon D40, then you’ll be happy to know that the Nokia N900 will be landing in Australia next month.
The phone will set you back $899, and will be available from Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi, as well as telco specialists Crazy Johns, Telechoice and Allphones.

Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 10:40 PMMaemo is pretty good actually, i’ve already got an N900 and it’s great for multitasking, it’s smooth and the hardware of the N900 makes the screen surprisingly responsive seeing as how it’s resistive and not capacitive. Also, the UI is finger friendly.

Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 2:38 AMMaemo is an open source OS, and is still in beta I believe, so I would imagine there are a few bugs with the OS.
Theres videos flying around that people have managed to play games like Duke Nukem 3D and Starcraft on the N900.
Judging by the fact that you can buy it from Jb Hi Fi generally means its going to be on Telstra.

Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 2:16 PMMaemo 5 is NOT in Beta. It’s been final for quite some time. The next stage of Maemo, 6, could be considered in beta. But as there’s now the whole Meego thing (merging Intel Moblin), there’s the added ‘fun’ of this. No announcement’s been made on compatibility of the new upcoming OS on n900 but I do suspect community folks will try it, if Intel-Nokia decide against.

Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 5:43 PM@Pete, it’ll have X & GTK/Clutter installed (meego), the main interface will be done on Qt, so any apps should require minimal if any porting from maemo5 to maemo6. Qt is also available now for developers for maemo5, so they can develop for Qt now, and have it work later (or on symbian with a recompile).

Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 8:40 AM$899 !!! Its cheaper to buy it from dell and pay for 2 day fedex to AU via a forwarding company than it would be to buy it locally … typical

Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 6:59 PMyeh crazy johns means teltsra but Telechoice and Allphones generally means optus.

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 8:00 AMcrazy johns is owned by VHA (vodafone)
and it probably wont be locked to any carriers and will only be available as an unlocked handset.
the n900 only has a small target audience (people who know what maemo is) so carriers wont want to have it on there network as it wont stand up well against more mainstream phones like the n97 and the iphone

Friday, March 5, 2010 at 4:14 PMI have had a N900 for over a month now i bought it from an Optus store in CBD brisbane. I didn’t realise it wasn’t released yet.
All i can say is this phone is amazing. I had an N95 and had to buy this one because i ended up throwing the other one at the wall with its horrible hardware.
The only drawback with it at this stage is it doesn’t do video calling and i was able to install a program to do mms which the phone straight out of the box does not have. But nokia has already sent out 3 software updates since i got the phone so i guess these features will be added in upcoming updates.
Apart from this i can not say a negative thing about this phone. Its speed of application opening is amazing

Sunday, April 18, 2010 at 2:54 PMHi, I have also had an N900 for a while. It’s great but I have two big problems with it. Firstly, the camera does not work – when opening the shutter or clicking the camera icon the yellow bar comes up with the text ‘Operation failed.’ This is for no apparent reason and seems to be a major, widespread flaw with the N900 to date. Secondly, I cannot seem to download apps from Nokia Ovi store, I think you need to have an American mobile. Is this the case? What have you found? If you (or anyone else guys) can help me with these problems it would be much appreciated. Cheers.

Friday, March 12, 2010 at 10:52 AMre aske’s comments, you must have purchased an overseas version in the ‘optus’ store as all of the optus employees that I have spoken with do not have a clue about this device(its not a phone, its a internet tablet with phone features added…..
Which carriers will adopt this phone on a plan?I’d hazard a guess and say all 3G carriers will, Telstra’s next G network is not compatible(a second version of the N900 with Next G wil be released shortly).
The N900 has been released/equipped with maemo 5 out of the box in other markets. It is entirely possible that the Oz version will have meego straight away(aka maemo 6). With the cost of this unit being $899.00 It is at the top end, however it will be a device that can be infinitely updateable via Meego and the open source concept will yield many opportunities for development. So, if you don’t want an iPhone(for the obvious reason’s) this could be the device for you. Personally I can’t wait to get mine!

Sunday, May 30, 2010 at 10:56 AMI live in a reasonably remote area and (due to work/life stuff) have basically ignored the whole “smart phone” thing…. that is until I spotted the N900 and read about Maemo 5. It was love at first sight!
I purchased an N900 from Allphones in Albany (WA) just over a week ago, after reading about it in a mag my daughter bought for me. I’ve been a Linux user for many years (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint) and Maemo 5 just feels like a natural extension of my PCs… It’s a mini linux box. Awesome!
I bought mine outright ($799) and inserted my existing Telstra SIM from my Nokia 6600 Slide. Works Great.
Had some issues with Wireless connectivity but they were resolved after installing an automatic update. Well done Nokia!

Sunday, November 14, 2010 at 7:13 PMDoes anyone know if the n900 can be supported on optus if i buy it overseas? or will it only be compatible with an overseas carrier?
