Israeli Raid Cancelled After Very Stupid Facebook Post

10:00AM March 5, 2010 | Adam Frucci

If you’re in the military, here’s a tip: don’t put upcoming missions in your Facebook status. You wouldn’t think someone would need to tell you that, but here we are.

A raid on suspected militants in the West Bank was cancelled yesterday after an Israeli soldier updated his Facebook status to read “On Wednesday we clean up Qatanah, and on Thursday, god willing, we come home.” The solider has since, unsurprisingly, been relieved of combat duty for being a moron. He’ll also spend 10 days in prison for his update.

Trying to educate soldiers on the importance of not leaking classified info to Facebook, the Israel Defence Forces have started putting up new posters in bases:

In posters placed on military bases, a mock Facebook page shows the images of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Syrian President Bashar Assad and Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah. Below their pictures – and Facebook “friend requests” – reads the slogan: “You think that everyone is your friend?”

I really want to see one of those posters. Anyone in the IDF want to send us a picture? I won’t post it on Facebook, promise. [NY Times]

I can’t believe Adam Frucci wouldn’t point out that there is the possibility this soldier wanted the mission to be aborted. For example maybe the soldier had a moral decision against the raid etc. The best way to cancel it was to act as an ‘moron’ so that he wouldn’t be punished any further than he has been as his superiors felt he was just being careless rather than purposefully sabatoging the planned raid

Unless he didn’t control his privacy settings properly, does this mean the Taliban are friends with the Israeli military since that’s the only other way to see the posts?

I call bluff, another stunt from the Israelis to toot their horns proclaiming they have intelligence in where Bin Laden is… but oops, not anymore because of someone on Facebook.

    Bullshit.
