If you say “iPad” to Fujitsu PR director Masahiro Yamane, he doesn’t think about Apple. No, the only thing that comes to mind is Fujitsu’s Windows CE-based iPad, from 2002. And soon, lawyers! Lot of lawyers. [NYT via DigitalDaily]
So not only is iPad a terrible name, it’s a terrible name that has already been given to a product!
iSlate, iTablet are somewhat better names, although still pretty bad, and more importantly, have no prior art at least.
Don’t forget that Apple launched the iphone knowing that the “iphone” name belonged to Cisco. I am guessing that Cisco got a nice payout for that name? Perhaps Fujistu will get one too? I do like the fact that they launch products with little respect for other people’s brands though. I myself am thinking of developing a new software to run a computer. I might call it “windows”. Great idea hey?
YAY! This is going to be awesome. I’d love to see the panic in the streets as the millions of iPads are delayed from delivery because Apple isn’t even sure if they can sell them as “iPad”.
Even better will be Apple having to put its tail between its legs and announce to the world “it’s not called iPad anymore.”
BUT, that’s unlikely. I’m guessing Apple will throw a heap of cash at Fujitsu and Fujitsu will shut up.
With the launch of the iPad tablet, Apple has managed to become the ultimate digital go-between company for high quality and high price content in a small yet very affluent segment of the population … NQ Logic encourages you to check out why Apple’s iPad is the final digital puzzle for their ultimate connected consumer strategy at http://www.nqlogic.com

First Apple steals ideas and technology from Nokia, now the name from Fujitsu, so much for their brilliant designs!

Colin, you might want to reconsider your suggestion of ‘ideas and technology’ theft in the light of Apple’s patent counterclaims.

Well apparently its OK for Apple to steal names off of other companies but nobody can have an apple in their logo (See Woolworths V Apple).
The iPad is a major disappointment it should have been so much more.
