Is PS3′s New Firmware Killing Blu-ray Drives?

1:22PM January 17, 2010 | Kyle VanHemert

This lengthy thread at the Playstation forums suggests that some combination of the new 3.10 firmware and Modern Warfare 2 is killing PS3 Blu-ray drives. Maybe it’s true, or maybe they’re all just drinking the kool-aid.

Forum members have reportedly pinpointed several reproducible freezes in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which they claim began only after installing the 3.10 firmware. After experiencing this freezing, many members reported problems in other games, leading them to conclude that the firmware update adversely affected their Blu-ray drives.

Blu-ray diodes do have a finite life span, and it’s hard to say if in these cases the drives have just run their course or if there is in fact something amiss with the new firmware. It’s tricky. Sometimes, when an individual settles on an explanation for something, other people force themselves to find “evidence” corroborating that explanation. Sort of like how everyone started finding references to 2pac faking his own death in his music (those are real, though).

It could all just be a coincidence, or the Blu-ray diodes could be dying of old age, or there really could be some issue with the new firmware that is causing drives to crap out. If you have any insight, share it in the comments. [Playstation]

Every new firmware update seems to have people complaining of dead BR drives/dual shocks/various other components it seems.
I’ve been lucky so far *touch wood*

Well I’m at work today and my brother will probably play MW2 all day while I’m gone, so I’ll let you know if shit happens.

    Interesting article. But..

Aren’t we on update 3.15? At least that is what my console states. The optional update that has become compulsory.

Although this may seem cruel I am enjoying this news and my friends precious PS3 not working. It seems ironic that after the time of the 360 failing so much that the blu-ray drives are dying or failing.
This news has put me off buying a PS3.
and before you ask my friend only said that the drive wasn’t working, nothing about MW2.

sure M$ is the puppet master
every time in this generation war that ps3 pass xbox in sales for a month, some nonsense rumor star spreading like fire.
you know M$ policy “if you tell a lie 1000 times many start believing is true” as in “Windows is the safest SO”
apparently the only thing M$ has to stop ps3 sales is lies, i mean words.

Just after recently (abouat a week) updated to Firmware 3.15, my FAT 40Gb PS3 console just broke about two weeks ago while I’m playing Tekken 6 with my brother, just suddenly freezes and won’t read any disc at all after that..

I update the firmware, cause it’s needed to play the game..

The system was rarely played (1-3 hours a fortnightly)..

After that, tried to google the problem..

    and BAMMMMMMMM…!!

so much people having the same problem…

    very disappointed with SONY…

Out of the 15 people I know with PS3′s IRL, only 1 has had a problem. A faulty BR drive, that did seem to coincide with a FW update. He didn’t play MW2 though.

More than half the 20 people I know with 360′s have had RROD.

My PS3 is an original Jap 80gb. The BD laser died after about 2 years and needed to be replaced. I did it myself as Sony wont even touch imported consoles even at a price. It was very easy to replace (much easier than a fat PS2) and i think from memory I got the BD laser for around $20 from china. This was a quite common (as is there were quite a few people with the same problem) occurrence when I looked it up on the net about 1 years ago. Maybe it’s just a few ppls consoles have crapped out coincidentally around the time of the update.

However even then when mine died, it would play most games fine, however fallout 3 froze randomly and eventually froze and killed it. Maybe some games are more read heavy and stress out the laser more.

Oh and btw my ps3 works fine with the chinese laser, but I guess i just gambled and won…

I have the 60gb PS3 and after a recent update it froze during Assassins Creed 2. Since then it has frozen multiple times in various games and a blu ray movie. It will no longer start any games at all.

ya i have had problems since installing the firmware, tried watching blu ray and all these red dots were coming up and fucking up the screen
i though it was my tv so i hooked up to another tv and it was the same, so i figured it was gonna be mah ps3 but if other ppl are havin this issue then its a lil fishy

I have come to the conclusion all the next gen consoles have horrible reliability. I use 360s as media extenders through the house and three from three have red ringed and been replaced on warranty. That’s a 100% failure rate, a fair bit higher than Microsoft’s figures.
My PS3 has also been repaired/replaced twice already after failing to read disks and tonight has stopped reading disks again! An hour later I read this article about the firmware update possibly killing PS3s and blueray diodes dying of old age. WTF? I have a TV from 1980 that still works. I have a 15 year old Pioneer CD player that still works. A $1000 console I bought in 2007 does not qualify for ‘old age’. So now I can look forward to replacing the bluray drive every f@*#ing 12 months?

Just last tuesday after the update 1/12/2010 playing mw2 my 80gb system started locking up 5-20 min into gameplay. Im going to order a new laser and try that. I never had a problem with my fucking atari or nintendo i think im going to pull it out of storage.

My 1yr 1/2 old 80gb froze while I was playing that new FF had to quit the game through the XMB then I put in standby mode for a while and now it won’t even recognize that there is a cd in it. Doesn’t even sound like it’s spinning the disc; I figure the blu-ray has completely crapped out. I’ve got fw 3.15 but I doubt that caused it cause it’s been on there for a while now.

played call of duty mod warfare and upgraded firmware so could play online game worked once then froze now unit wont play any blu ray dvd or games , i spent an hour on the phone with sony playstation tech supp and was told it had to be sent in for repair at a cost of $25O thats all i could do and they had not heard of this problem before, which after spending a cpl of hours researching this problem there are heaps of us with the same issue i would like to know if any of you have called sony and made them aware of the problem being forced to pay a flat rate of $250 to have the unit repaired if its a firmware issue is not on!! moreso because your told to do it so you can play the game

I only recently got my internet sorted at my new house. Was working fine, updated the firmware for both the system and MW2 and at the end of an online game it froze. Turned it off and it wouldn’t recognise any disc. Did a lot of turning off and on, wall and standby and some file restores (always says the files currupt) and it worked again for a bit suggesting it’s not hardware, then, again at the end of a game it’ll crash and i’m back to square one. I refuse to believe it’s hardware when even now once in a blue moon the disc works.Fact is it should work first time every time!
