8 Things That Suck About The iPad

My god, am I underwhelmed by the iPad. This is as inessential a product as I've ever seen, but beyond that, it has some absolutely backbreaking failures that will make me judge anyone who buys one.

Big, Ugly Bezel Have you seen the bezel on this thing?! It's huge! I know you don't want to accidentally input a command when your thumb is holding it, but come on.

No Multitasking This is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.

No Cameras No front facing camera is one thing. But no back facing camera either? Why the hell not? I can't imagine what the downside was for including at least one camera. Could this thing not handle video iChat?

Touch Keyboard So much for Apple revolutionising tablet inputs; this is the same big, ugly touchscreen keyboard we've seen on other tablets, and unless you're lying on the couch with your knees propping it up, it'll be awkward to use.

No HDMI/HD Video Out Want to watch those nice HD videos you downloaded from iTunes on your TV? Too damned bad! If you were truly loyal, you'd just buy an AppleTV already.

The Name iPad Get ready for Maxi pad jokes, and lots of 'em!

No Flash No Flash is annoying but not a dealbreaker on the iPhone and iPod Touch. On something that's supposed to be closer to a netbook or laptop? It will leave huge, gaping holes in websites. I hope you don't care about streaming video! God knows not many casual internet users do. Oh wait, nevermind, they all do.

Adaptors, Adaptors, Adaptors So much for those smooth lines. If you want to plug anything into this, such as a digital camera, you need all sorts of ugly adaptors. You need an adaptor for USB for god's sake.

Update: Why stop at eight? Here are more things we are discovering that suck about the iPad.

It's Not Widescreen Widescreen movies look lousy on this thing thanks to its 4:3 screen, according to Blam, who checked out some of Star Trek on one. It's like owning a 4:3 TV all over again!

Doesn't Support T-Mobile 3G Sure, it's "unlocked." But it won't work on T-Mobile, and it uses microSIMs that literally no one else uses.

A Closed App Ecosystem The iPad only runs apps from the App Store. The same App Store that is notorious for banning apps for no real reason, such as Google Voice. Sure, netbooks might not have touchscreens, but you can install whatever software you'd like on them. Want to run a different browser on your iPad? Too bad!

Now I start to understand why it is named Ipad. It is a sanitizing product used for sanitizing..our computing expectations and habits!

I'm so glad I've never owned and never will own any Apple products. The main reason is their mandate to all suckers erm... users to only be able to use their proprietary software and try to monopolize every penny out of their pockets.

Besides things like the camera and input, most of the 'missing' features would be cleared up via, if not firmware updates, then the eventual hacking of the iPad. The future versions of the iPad will also, as mentioned, likely add all that which should of really been added into this one.
If i felt that i needed a laptop for general use i would likely eventually lead myself to the iPad as the primary choice. It would though depend on the status of the jailbreaking front - not a fan of Apple. I have found the time i spent dissing the iPhone was wasted when i eventually bought one for the mp3 player function and 32gb storage but in doing so found that it suits my needs more than the technologically superior HTC i previously had.

What a doodle of a product. I have an imac and an ipod touch, when the heck am i going to use this thing? Can you really imagine the dildo sitting on the train laughing at the new season of Two and a Half Men on this piece of junk? I watched the launch video with great anticipation and then sat back and laughed when Steve Jobs went to a website that had a streaming video and for about 3.5 seconds the projector the audience was watching was almost entirely filled by the empty, question-marked square that was the ghost of a streaming video...

No multitasking is pathetic. I genuinely, after watching this, have a feeling that Apple actually don't know how to port over multitasking from the Mac's to the portable devices.

Another point that I don't think has been raised yet, is that given its size, its glaringly obvious silver back panel and its awkwardness to quickly pocket and hide, that it might become a prime target for subway thieves and muggers?

man, i cant wait for this thing to be released and hear that they all snapped, i think ill just stick with reality and use my notebook.

Apple allowed third party browsers that work on the UIWebView. I think the author is not aware of a lot of things on the iPhone front.

MS and Adobe things that they can use all the 100% power of your CPU and graphics. If you want to stay alive on battery - have to get rid of both MS and Adobe. Once Flash is an open standard - others can re-write. Even pretty simple animation on the Flash would take 100% processor time - the equivalent on the CoreAnimation would be pretty straightforward and simple. Remember ActiveX and Flash has killed the web (traffic and what not)

So, having been linked by Mr. Diaz in the "iPad is the Future" article, are the initial perceptions still accurate? Or no?

There are a few irritations but the biggest limitation is self imposed by apple and that is limiting access to apps by country. If I had known this I would never have purchased an iPad and on that basis I would never recommend this product.

perhaps when people realise that these mobile devices are just gimmicky toys then the flash debate will also be irrelevant..
