This is really scary news: Iran has successfully tested their Sajjil-2 yesterday. Why is this really scary? Because it is a two-stage solid fuel missile, which represents a giant leap in reaching the continental United States. Here’s how.
Iran already has the Shahab-3, which is capable of reaching Israel and parts of Europe, like the Sajjil-2. But the Shahab-3 uses liquid fuel, which means two things: First, they have to be fuelled before launch, something that can be detected by spy satellites, so potential targets can take appropriate countermeasures. Second, the liquid fuel is highly corrosive, greatly affecting the accuracy of the missile by destabilising it.
The Sajjil-2 – which is designed to be a weapon payload carrier, not a peaceful space rocket – uses the same kind of solid fuel technology that the United States uses in the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. That means that they can be perfectly accurate, like the Minuteman III is. But more importantly, these missiles can be safely stored and launched with no preparation or warning. Click the big red button, and the birds are on their way one second later.
The new Iranian missile is only a two-stage rocket. That means that they can launch one right now to Israel or Europe, with no warning whatsoever. It also means that, if they add a third stage, they would be able to use these missiles to reach any part of the world, from San Francisco, California, to London, United Kingdom, to New York, New York, that little town blue.
Hello Cold War 2, we didn’t really miss you. [Weekly Standard via Defense Tech]

Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 12:30 PMNo need to panic people. This is not bad news. Infact it is good news as this will bring more stability to the region now that countries other than the west can arm their missiles to hit other countries.

Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 12:59 PMLet Israel and/or US take the military option off the “table”, and then expect the Iranians to ease up on their missile system programs.
Even if Iranians intend to develop nuclear weapons, who gives another nation the right to give itself the right to talk about military options? Did anybody talk about military options on the table when US, Russia, China, India, England, France, Israel, Pakistan, were developing nuclear weapon? Did anyone talk about military options on the table when Brazil, Argentina, Australia, enriched uranium?
Are you out of your mind? The Iranians have all the rights to protect themselves.

Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 2:00 PMScary?! Jesus, you are brainwashed. I do not think of this development to be scary. In fact this is good news. The more the Iranians beef up their defenses, the more assured the world will be that the world warmongers will not stage another war on this planet, and push the world into another crisis.

Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 6:43 PMcold war 2??
wasn’t the hole point of that that the Russians and the US were on a fairly level playing field with regards to tech? its hardly an arms race if the US has such a massive head start. (unless its a tortus/hare type thing…)
just another test for M.A.D

Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 10:23 PMMy goodness if people think that iran is a peace loving country that has never threatened to wipe another country off the map, they are living in a fantasy land.
Israel or the US should try to wipe this program out.

Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 4:32 AMIt isn’t scary for the people that Iran doesn’t hate. As the others say, it act as a stabilizer, so that USA can’t walk into any middle east country and declare war because of their inability to obtain proper intelligence from their military. The US will have to think twice before do something like invade Iraq because of “chemical weapons”.
