Tethering Coming To Telstra iPhones

Gizmodo AU

As picked up by David Flynn at APC, Telstra CEO David Thodey has responded to a comment on the Telstra Exchange blog to announce that the company is “working with Apple to enable tethering on the iPhone”, although he can’t reveal any specific dates. It’s kind of mind blowing that it hasn’t happened already, although I’m sure it’s what happens when you get two companies so focussed on doing things their own way that neither is willing to make the sacrifice necessary to bring this service to their customers.

I thought all that stuff with the new iPhone OS and tethering had been resolved already?
I’m using Virgin, and tethering works a treat, although the option did disappear when I initially upgraded it’s back in full swing again now!

man, why would anyone buy a phone that had this teathering crap.. just use a real phone that can be a modem without special charges/restrictions.. the iPhone has so many restrictions, but people are so overwelmed by the apps.. all WM phones have 1000′s and 1000′s of apps that will run on them, and most of them are free.. same for Nokia’s..

The market has spoken… and it says “we don’t want Windows Mobile”. There may be “1000’s and 1000’s of apps” on all of the platforms but the ones on iPhone are the ones people want. This rankles with people who just can’t stand Apple winning, but it’s the truth.

And its about time!! My old Nokia E51 had tethering enabled and it was sweet yet Telstra opt to disable it on my new Iphone! Go figure!! The result; I went to Optus as the USB modem was free!

On a side note! I still have a Bigpond express card (cost = $299) that I used for 18 months and then disconnected, when I went to reconnect I was told I needed a new express card! HAAAAA! You wish!

How about Visual Voicemail? I would find that much more useful.

It’s 8am Sunday December 6 and this message is being typed on my laptop using my iPhone 3GS as a tethered modem with Telstra! I got a message about a carrier settings update, which I loaded and then went into General and Network to turn it on. I have NOT changed any Telstra account settings (ie payment plans). So the data appears to be covered within my existing data plan!! THis sounds absolutely excellent!

2Mb/sec download speed at my house.
