If You Buy A Used Xbox 360 That’s Been Banned, You’re Screwed

Major Nelson, updating us on a periodic Xbox Live purge — banhammering cheaters, pirates and other folks of ill-repute, though not 12-year-olds — reminds us of Microsoft’s official policy that if you buy a used Xbox 360 that’s been banned, you’re screwed.

The crux of the matter is that the warranty on an Xbox 360 “is not transferable”, so if you buy a used console “that has been previously banned, you will not be able to connect to Xbox LIVE”. So if you buy a used Xbox 360, make sure it’s from a less-than-shady party — and if you buy from a used games shop, make ‘em connect it to Xbox Live so you know you’re getting something that works. something needs to be put in place… a banned serial number database to check against the console before purchase or something like that. if MS are going to ban people they need to make sure no one else is effected. this is sloppy business practises once again MS with no foresight.

if microsoft are so wrong, so inept, so completely backwards that they can’t manage to launch a console without having it melt itself and then sell horribly over priced accessories and hard drive at twice the value of parts, then charge for online service that sony give out for free, claim that the wireless adapter is meant to be external when it is built in the ps3, admit the fact that the wireless controller batteries wont last longer than 8 months before not keeping charging, have wireless steering wheels catch fire (personal experience that one, some battery connection issue), or howabout the amazing backwards compatability the reaches almost 30% of the library, perhaps you like the external HD-DVD that plays the dead generation of ‘new’ media. after all this i still find myself asking..

why do people keep buying the xbox 360?

it’s like saying to microsoft, “hey you did a really bad job on this, so have some of my money”

how can you expect microsoft to learn when you never try to teach them?

Exactly. Of course some of us look at all this and then go buy a PS3 instead. hmmm, love the PS3.

Everyone who is talking about moving to the PS3 or having a PS3 makes them immune. Think again. Microsoft’s move to ban pirates, mods, and hackers will surely get picked up by Sony and Nintendo.
I mean console makers do not want you to pirate. Sony is losing money on their systems with the price cut.. and software is how they make their bread and butter. Believe me you are not immune. It will spread.
