Handbrake just updated to 0.9.4 which uses x264 libraries to encode faster and smaller file sizes. On my iMac Core i7 a DVD ripped 25% faster.
It also has better Xbox and PS3 presets, among other things. It depends on a now unavailable 64-bit version of VLC but you can still download the nightly builds here. [Handbrake]

VLC never had an official 64bit OS X version for release.
You have to either use the beta ‘Goldeneye’ 1.03, or use the 64Bit version of 1.02

I have a Mac Pro 2.26 x8 core 16GB.
I have tried both VLC 1.02 & 1.03, but don’t need it as I always rip with MacTheRipper first.
But I just tested a “Normal” encode of “the Santa Clause” in 0.9.4 with a frame rate of 115fps.
When I use the earlier 64 bit beta version of handbrake (HandBrake-svn2907-MacOSX.5_GUI_x86_64) I get a frame rate of 140fps.
Go figure. Naturally, I reverted back to the earlier build. Again, I should note that I had already ripped the DVD to HD.
I believe the speed improvement is when ripping DVDs with VLC 1.02 and not by itself. I don’t know what anyone else has found.
P.S. I don’t know if it matters but I boot with a 64 bit kernel.
