Barnes & Noble Ruins Nerd Christmas

4:41AM November 21, 2009 | John Herrman

Nobody has any idea if the Nook is actually any good yet, but no matter: It’s the perfect Christmas gift, in theory! Or at least it was until Barnes & Noble ran out of them.

Granted, it’s a little worrisome that Barnes & Noble is taking pre-orders before letting reviewers have their say, so maybe this enforced waiting period is a good thing. At any rate, it’ll be January — well after we’ll have run B&N’s Android-powered ereader through its paces — before anyone else will be able to get one. [B&N via Bits]

John Herrman makes good sense here. The specs look really good and there are features anyone wanting a flexible e-reader would want, but the fact that not one reviewer has one in hand even now (outside of the plastic placesetter Gizmodo mentioned re New York Nook stands ) and there’s no clue as to the interface and how well it functions has puzzled me.

It’s an attractive design – but your pic here makes me wonder if the bottom panel can be a distraction while reading. Have they said whether it can be turned off during reading sessions if you want to save battery life and don’t want the backlit part for the reading sesison?

I would really hope you can turn bottom screen of! but I am sure you can… otherwise it would not have a big battery life at all. It looks great! but wouldn’t it be another kindle, which is sucking you into buying proprietary books, which you can then never transfer to another device? I am still a big fan of open devices.. maybe the new BeBook 2 will give the nook a run for it’s money… and knowing them, it only will be available when it’s actually available.
