Telstra Unveils The T-Hub… Does Anybody Want One?

Gizmodo AU

Telstra T-HubIf it wasn’t for the fact that I need a home phone line for ADSL (I can’t get Naked at my exchange), I would have dumped my home landline years ago. The T-Hub, which was shown off at the Telstra Investor Day yesterday and also popped up on their intranet, doesn’t really make me want to hang on to the legacy landline option…

The T-Hub is a device that connects your Telstra home phone and your Telstra Broadband wirelessly, and features a 7-inch LCD touchscreen that allows you to jump on board a whole heap of Sensis based services.

From the Telstra staff Intranet description:

Customers will be able to make calls easily scrolling through their contact list and pressing “Call”. Or if a plumber is needed, click to search Yellow Pages online and select the number to call. Enjoy the added convenience of sending SMS to mobile numbers on the Telstra network and to most Australian fixed numbers, or checking the weather forecast, or scheduling family events and appointments on the electronic calendar.

The memo also describes the T-Hub as a potential photo frame or internet radio player.

The device is supposed to be available in the “coming months”. But from reading through that description, there doesn’t seem to be any killer feature that my mobile phone or laptop can’t do just as easily. Although maybe if Telstra do follow through on their promise to drop pricing, it might come part of a bundle option? Would that sway opinions?

I am on my 3rd T-Hub. I would not buy one under any circumstances if I had known just what I was in for when I bought this “white elephant” I have had nothing but trouble from the 1st day I set it up. It “freezes”, constantly gives an engaged signal from both the hub and the hands free phone (that comes with it). I sent the 1st one back and received another one. 3 days later I phoned Telstra again to report the same problems. I have told them from the second week I owned one (April 2010) that I want my money back. Guess what? Next week I received my original one back saying that there was nothing wrong with it. Remember the 2nd one was doing the same thing. I still have my 3rd T-Hub which is stil “freezing” and still giving an engaged signal most of the time when I try & make a phone call. All I want is my money back so I can buy a phone. Bring on the day when I can just have the internet and my mobile.

I’m looking forward to receiving mt T-Hub in the coming week.

I’m surprised at the Telstra bashing that goes on.

I have all my telco services with Telstra and with their latest “Bundle” I get T-Hub home phone, Bigpond with 100GB ADSL+2 and Mobile with 200MB of data and $400.00 worth of calls etc and total monthly spend is $120.00 plus any additional calls on the mobile and the home phone.

Oh, and I got a $200.00 credit when I took out the my new Nokia mobile. LOL

While I have to say I’ve been with Telstra for over 20 years they have always been good to deal with and my reports from collegues about other providers makes me stay right where I am.

Just telling it as I have experienced it.

We have received our T Hun today and I am thrilled with it.

Our foxtel phone connection is a stand alone base unit (in a different room to the IQ box) I cannot work out how to connect this to the t hub, have tried several different options, but either the phone or the power for the phone doesn’t work.

I have spent the last 67 minutes on the phone – firstly to Telstra who told me it was a Foxtel issue, then foxtel who told me it was Telstra land line issue, then transferred to Telstra again who again are telling me it is a Foxtel issue!

Can anybodu tell me how to set this up – it won’t be an issue until we want to order a Box Office movie (fotel suggested that I just connect the phone line as needed…..)

    Thanks
    K

Unfortunately the Telstra T-Hub is nasty cheap garbage. We received a new T-Hub and here are the problems so far: Yellow Pages is so slow, I tried searching for “plumber” and it took at least 10 minutes to return any results – it was quicker for me to turn on a computer to access yellow pages online. The phones included with the T-Hub switch off when you are talking on the phone which abruptly disconnects your call. If you are trying to change the settings on one of the included handsets the phone will suddenly show “Handset -6- Busy” and then reset to the main menu – we even have a 6th handset. Final conclusion – the T-Hub is cheap rubbish, same as all the other hardware that telstra supplies.
