Channel 7′s Second Digital Channel To Be Called ‘Mate’?

Gizmodo AU

Channel mateIf this trademark application from Channel 7 is actually the name of their upcoming second SD digital channel, then I weep for free-to-air TV. Mediaspy has uncovered a heap of trademark applications from the network, which includes a number of images which all contain the words ‘Mate’ or ‘Channel Mate’.

Despite contacting the network, Mediaspy didn’t actually get confirmation that this is the name for Seven’s second channel, so this remains in the rumour camp for now. After all, it could be some new type of universal remote or something, or some TiVo related gadget. But if it is the name of the second channel, am I alone in thinking it’s the stupidest TV channel name ever?

It says something about how crappy Australian networks are when all we get as new channels are “GO” and “Mate”.

channel mate sounds like a token aussie tv g-code replacement. buy the channel mate now only 19.95 or your money back.

Remember this is only one possibility… large companies will often register many different designs or names as they put forward a new concept. That MS article seems to be quite deliberaetly cautious too – “a likely choice” and “unconfirmed”.

I just wait to hear what channels fill the gap between “Go” and “Mate”

Maybe “f*&k” and “yourself” – great lifestyle channels :)

In the words made immortal in this video ( http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/end/php ), all I can say to this decision is … Double-ewe Tee Eff? Mate?

Actually, that’s what I might call it if that’s what they go with.

I don’t care what they call it – just do it, so everyone can then understand what I’ve been saying for some time – that you don’t need a HD set top box, just an SD will get all the channels for normal viewing (unless you want to record from HD or some other use)

Maybe it’s going to be channel 8 and a play on words. “Your mate on eight” or whatever.

What about “Stay” for a name, that’s at least in direct competition with “Go”.
