Channel 7’s Second Digital Channel To Be Called ‘Mate’?
If this trademark application from Channel 7 is actually the name of their upcoming second SD digital channel, then I weep for free-to-air TV. Mediaspy has uncovered a heap of trademark applications from the network, which includes a number of images which all contain the words ‘Mate’ or ‘Channel Mate’.
Despite contacting the network, Mediaspy didn’t actually get confirmation that this is the name for Seven’s second channel, so this remains in the rumour camp for now. After all, it could be some new type of universal remote or something, or some TiVo related gadget. But if it is the name of the second channel, am I alone in thinking it’s the stupidest TV channel name ever?

Running a close 2nd behind Joey-Jo-Jo Junior Shabadoo that’s the worst name I ever heard…
Fail.
epic fail
Well you’ve got Channel Dave in the UK… went down pretty well, but yeah, Mate sounds pretty awful
WTF!!! at least go was alright an its a decent channel i wont watch this just because of the name i just cant see myself saying im going to watch a tv show on mate
It says something about how crappy Australian networks are when all we get as new channels are “GO” and “Mate”.
iChannel 2.0 ???
damn!, you beat me to it
Oh wow!! I didn’t think it was possible but Syfy in the U.S. DOES have some competition in the lamest name category
channel mate sounds like a token aussie tv g-code replacement. buy the channel mate now only 19.95 or your money back.
Might as well have called it Channel Bonza and be done with it!
its good that we are getting new channels on the free to air network but seriously -_- calling a channel mate is just another addition to the australian stereotype o’well hopefully these are just bad roomers
Remember this is only one possibility… large companies will often register many different designs or names as they put forward a new concept. That MS article seems to be quite deliberaetly cautious too – “a likely choice” and “unconfirmed”.
Yeah bad name.
Might as well have called it iChannel 2.0
They would have been netter off calling it iChannel7 2.0
I just wait to hear what channels fill the gap between “Go” and “Mate”
Maybe “f*&k” and “yourself” – great lifestyle channels :)
In the words made immortal in this video ( http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/end/php ), all I can say to this decision is … Double-ewe Tee Eff? Mate?
Actually, that’s what I might call it if that’s what they go with.
@Jon Darren – I’d watch channel Bonza!
I don’t care what they call it – just do it, so everyone can then understand what I’ve been saying for some time – that you don’t need a HD set top box, just an SD will get all the channels for normal viewing (unless you want to record from HD or some other use)
Denis
“What channel you watchin’ mate?”
“I’m watching Mate, mate.”
Maybe it’s going to be channel 8 and a play on words. “Your mate on eight” or whatever.
What about “Stay” for a name, that’s at least in direct competition with “Go”.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Tonight ON STAY! WE UNCOVER THE HARSH REALITY OF LIFE….. ON THE STREET!
Only on Stay!
man, our country is hilarious sometimes!
Mate: “MAAATTEEE!!! Check out what’s on!”
You: What channel
Mate: Mate…
You: What?! I asked what channel
Mate: MATE…
You: WHAT!?!?
Mate: FFS MATE!
You: *walks away in frustration
