Apple Wants To Make All iPod Shuffle Users Look Like Idiots
Oh Apple patents, you harbingers of coolness. Sometimes, however, you announce potential pain and doom. This iPod-cum-wireless headset is one of them. There’s no way I can look at these images and think that Jon Ive’s powers can save this.
I don’t even know why this iPod thingie—which includes microphone, headphone, memory, display and media player—is also a wireless headset. Would this be paired to an iPhone? It doesn’t make sense, since the iPhone is already a media player. Why would I want to have a second one on the headset itself? Maybe to connect to another non-media-playing mobile phone? Do those exist anymore? Does Steve know about this, per chance? [Baltimore Sun via 9to5]

Actually it makes a lot of sense.
Screen – Caller ID? [Better than that Voiceover stuff].
Onboard Memory – Tricky explanation.
See, the Voice Recording on iPhone is, put kindly, messy. And it uploads them to iTunes, when technically it isn’t so much music or video as it is a personal organiser type thing. So eventually it’l be moved out to iCal or something, but it has to figure out a way to remove it from the iPod section to stop it being classified as Music. It’s very crude atm.
Can you imagine the wonderful things you could do with onboard memory that’s not tied to the iPhone?
-Voicemail that’s not costing you money per 30 second block
[Phone takes the call if you don't answer, but plays a recorded message including a beep. It means instead of dialing back a separate number to replay the message, and then the number that originally called you, your headphones store the message that can be recalled at will, not costing you an arm and a leg, AND it reduces numbers called to one.]
-The recording of a telephone conversation (as the patent reads)
Then, Bluetooth, so it means it’l function as AD2P headphones. In addition to the above cool stuff.
If it can achieve the quality of the in-ear headphones I’d buy one. But perhaps a suggestion to improve quality? Why does there have to be a screen? Like the lights that appear behind the metal on the computers, can’t there be a small OLED grid that sits behind very thin metal that creates the same effect?
hahahaa.. by the looks of those pics i could probably smoke my ganja through it!
nice work apple!
Maybe it isn’t an ipod. Maybe it is a Bluetooth Stereo headset with screen to show battery level and USB port to charge it with.
That’s probably a wireless headset for the iphone… and I think the usb is for charging…
I don’t think whoever designed this has ever worn a set of earphones in their life though. I guarantee you that within 5 minutes of wearing it, it will fall out of your ear and shatter. Unless it’s the last one, which will make it the stupidest looking phone headset I’ve seen.
