Apple Buys Their Very Own Maps Company (See Ya, Google Maps)

The Apple/Google divorce continues to come into focus: Apple quietly bought Placebase, a mapping service company, back in July. Apple doesn’t buy companies it’s not going to use. Meaning, Apple’s getting into making their own maps. Peace out, Google.

Why High-Tech Swimsuits Are Still A Problem

Gizmodo AU

The controversy over high-tech swimsuits reached its tipping point a few months ago when officials finally decided to ban them as of 2010. But the damage has been done and swimming as a sport has been tainted forever.

Hands-on: Panasonic HDC-HS20

Gizmodo AU

Picking up Pannie’s HDC-HS20 came at the wrong end of a group camcorder review, and I say the wrong end because the user fit with this camera was almost instant, unlike a lot of other shooters in the group, which took a bit of getting used to. Perhaps it’s because I’ve used a lot of Panasonic cameras that this one felt so easy to handle. Or not.

Convicted Hacker Paralyses Prison Network. Duh.

Gizmodo AU

We can think of a whole bunch of things belonging firmly in the headslap category. There’s that recent silliness with iSnack 2.0, for starters. But this one strains plausability. It seems the management at a certain English prison thought it would be a good idea to save a few dollars on technical services by borrowing the skills of an inmate. Turns out the inmate was a convicted hacker. Left alone. With a computer. Duh. [Switched]via [Digg] .

The traditional—or perhaps stereotypical—relationship between computer nerds and jocks is one often characterised by bruises to the face, wedgies up the arse and dignity down the drain. But, as the developers behind Australia’s latest AFL and NRL games on PSP show us, it doesn’t always have to be this way.

Portable Pain Weapons Leave No Trace Of Use

We don’t hesitate to show our excitement over non lethal weapons, but the reality is that they’re kinda scary. In particular when we’re starting to see hand-held heat weapons which leave little to no trace of ever being used.

LG Unveils Sun-Smart POP (GD510)

Gizmodo AU

I don’t know about you but when I think smartphones, LG isn’t a brand I turn to first. However, according to Akihabara News, LG unveiled its “Pop” model yesterday, and it warrants a closer look – if not for its specs, then at least for its built-in solar panel.

Microsoft’s 224,000 Servers Only Take Four People To Set Up

There are 2000 in that container. And there are 112 such containers in Microsoft’s $US500 million Chicago data centre. It may seem somewhat ridiculous, but this container-based data centre design is absolutely brilliant (and environmentally sustainable to boot).

QOTD: Do You Prefer Running With or Without Gadgets?

Gizmodo AU

I saw this interview on The Daily Show a few weeks ago, where Jon Stewart interviews Christopher McDougall, author of Born to Run a book about the Tarahumara Indians and their ability to run hundreds of kilometres using nothing but a pair of sandals. It’s a fascinating interview—you should definitely watch it—but it does lead to a very interesting question. Are all the gadgets we use for running—from the expensive shoes to the Nike+iPod system, pedometers and GPS trackers—really necessary?
