Which Flavour Of Wi-Fi Do You Use?

The 802.11n spec has been in the news a lot lately. After six years, the spec has finally been approved, and we shall soon see wireless N coming to the Xbox and maybe even the iPod Touch.

It seems funny to me that wireless N is finally coming around despite the fact that I have been using it for years. But what about you? What Wi-Fi standard do you use at home?

As soon as N comes fitted in laptops I’d probably start looking at upgrading, but with all the hardware with fitted wifi (mini mac, atv, ps3, laptops), going out and buying a new access point seems like a waste overall…

At home we’ve got a heap of desktop computers connected through a mess of Cat5E cabling. Now we’ve added a number of netbooks and a laptop – all using 802.11b/g and working quite happily doing what they are good at doing. The only device that we have which is set up for the ‘new’ standard is forced to use 802.11g at home – but can use 802.11n at university.

As we slowly replace our desktops, there will be a temptation to move to 802.11n and have less cabling around the house – but with all our kids have their PCs in one room, this isn’t as attractive as might be the case in a more spread out household. I still cling to the notion that my wired network is more secure than a wireless set-up…

  • Wireless N here. My MacBook and my brother’s PC are equipped with N recievers, while all the other hardware is G capable.
