What Is This?
Wait, is NASA making weather balloons shaped like a Rubik’s Cube now?
Nah, it’s one of the many art installations sprinkled over the dusty playa at Burning Man 2009. This year’s theme is Evolution: A Tangled Bank. Safe travels if you’re a weekend burner, and don’t forget the white distilled vinegar to neutralise the super-fine alkaline playa dust!
One year later (and having travelled around three continents since), I’m still spotting in random places, most recently in my hiking shoes. [San Francisco Chronicle]

Are they building a Scotiabank theater in the dessert?
ploopsy
@ploopsy: No, they're building a TD theatre in the breakfast.
When in doubt, Burning Man.
@ploopsy: Did you just google image: giant colorful cube, and paste the second image?
Not that I was, or anything...
Joe Gjura
@Joe Gjura: No, I googled: "paramount toronto". I already knew about that theater before this post was made.
The Paramount used to be owned by Famous Players until Scotiabank somehow wound up with them. The cube is still there but the colour has been changed.

Up next, NASA's Simon Say's Satellite!

The after the jump should say "Sorry to get your hopes up!"

That would be cool if they had some sort of a way to play with the rubiks cube.
Like a computer interface that would change the colors of the lights as you touch the different "rings".
I love art much more when it's interactive.
dufus
You can see it in use here.[www.flickr.com]
@Dufus..They do. As you change the cube, the colors on the larger one change..
ugh. gross. i went to burning man last year at the urging of some family members who love it. i have never seen such a collection of sluts and douchebags in my life. and most of the "art" was a total joke.
@JonathanATTY: Very cool!
Now I wish I were at Burning man...
dufus
@JonathanATTY: Your family smells bad :(
Maori_Yelir
@lostarchitect: Yeah, it's a bunch of self righteous pricks who are about 4 decades late to the show pretending they are something unique. There's a reason why they take their art to burning man and not galleries after all.
Maori_Yelir
your definition of art must be limited to the gallery sense..BurningMan isn't gallery art. It's intereactive and so are the people. Loosen up. Those Sluts and Douchebags are my family. Unfortunealty, I had to miss the reunion this year, and instead I'm talking to you..ugh. gross.
lol after 10 days without a bath, yeah..we smell.par for the course.
I'm going to venture to guess that it is an Art.
@JonathanATTY: in case you missed what i said, they're my family too.
you have the art thing reversed, however. the "art" at burning man is incredibly limited and almost universally derivative of the rest of the junk around it. yes, maybe 10% or so of the stuff there has something to it. but the rest? not worth looking at.
also, jonathan, the little arrow below the text is a reply button. just press it to reply to a post instead of creating a new thread.
@Maori_Yelir: it's a really mixed bag. i wouldn't go so far as to call them all self righteous pricks, but some are. Many are just there to party and act crazy--which is totally fine! just stop lying to me about "art" and "community", because that is total horseshit.
@Lostarchitect:
I can't see the reply button, as most of this site is blocked here at work. Anyway, everyone has there reason for going, and for me, Art and Community are the big draws for me. I drive from GA to hang with our East Coast family for a week. It's the only time during the year 100+ of our friends can get together and throw down. The community of like minded people is what I crave. I will give it too you though, the art last year was not so good and there was a major lack of inspiring pieces. This years seems much different. Glad your part of the Fam. )'(
another cool cube before and after
looks like the "Cube in Irvine, CA) or a Rubick's cube
@Maori_Yelir: Take a look at "burners without borders" and see if you still think their a bunch of "self righteous pricks"..
Unsolvable! It's got two yellow top left corners.
cancel that.... I just did a little imaginary twisting and realized I'm stoopid. no wonder I never solved one.
@lostarchitect: Jonathan said he was logged in at work and there was no reply button. I also often read Giz from work and reply is never an option and half the pictures will not load. I'm sure any Giz reader would be smart enough to know how to navigate the internet and press a button labeled reply if the option were available.

I thought burning man was goofy but it was easy to get laid, but I’m really not that sophisticated I just like desert camping.
