Toshiba Shacks Up With BDX2000 Blu-ray Following HD DVD’s Death
We all knew this day would come. Following the death of his beloved HD DVD, Toshiba couldn’t stand the cold bed, the lonely nights and the tables for one. Suppressing tears, he released the BDX2000 Blu-ray player.
A bit ashamed, he tenuously explained the situation to friends and family, detailing the player’s typical 1080p/24fps output while urging his former in-laws that AVCHD support and SD card reading had made the whole decision a lot easier. They didn’t understand, but they accepted his decision. They’d loved him once, like a son.
Of course, Toshiba’s most judgemental friends noticed that the BDX2000 was a skinnier model than the HD-XA1 (bless her heart). Plus, she was prone to flaunting around town with a smoked glass finish like she owns the place.
Besides, for $US250 this November, most of us would have picked the PS3. [prnewswire and Image]

@BostonPimpDaddy2: well those ps3 updates seem to come with a few bugs so maybe the constant updates aren't as necessary.

Would've loved for my Toshiba Sat to have a BDrom

Poor Toshiba... You did your best to fight the Sony bully group.
Now, I will play Batman:AA with my PS3.
Ogami
anyone who's a fan of bluray will boycott this just because it's toshiba
hahahaha, what a genius writeup. Gizmodo does it again

@Dafrety: I would put my $ on PS3 firmware updating versus these stand alone BR players having firmware updates.

@RenegadeIrishman_IsFullOfStars: in other news, there is none. Can we reschedule the Mac announcements till today? I want my MMS...
way to really commit to the personification there...
Who wouldn't pay the extra $50 for the PS3?
Toshiba is a guy with a chick's name?

I imagine most people going for standalone Blu-ray players instead of the PS3 want something that sucks up less power. I wouldn't want something that has the chance it's firmware won't get upgraded.

Yeah, and I've had a PS3 since 2007 with no firmware issues. Do you have a PS3, logicalnoise?
Joshua Pacada
You know, if Toshiba had a bigger disk size, he might not have been so lonely.
$250, ouch.
Why did Toshiba even bother? $50 more gets you the best blu-ray player on the market. Even if you buy 0 PS3 games.

@logicalnoise:
I have had a PS3 since March 08 and I have never had any problems with the firmware

People who get a standalone also get it for a matching brand for their tv so they can use the hdmi-cec feature to control everything with one remote. It makes everything easy for people who arent tech savy.

Can we trade in out Toshiba HD-DVD players for one? pwetty pweeeese?
not surprised in the least. i'm sure had everything been reversed, sony would be making an hd-dvd player for $250 as well...
@Worf: I think what you meant was the best blu-ray playing, game playing, movie downloading, machine on the market
@Sith_Mafia: Yes... People will boycott quality because of loyalty to bluray. Totally. Doesn't matter that the amount of bluray owners during HD-DVD's market push was insignificant, and that nobody even cares anymore. Toshiba bad! Bad Toshiba! Down with Toshiba!
Or you know... Most people will just go on not caring.
@Worf: For being a profile 2.0 player, the price is comparable to what is on the market.
