Screen shot 2009-09-25 at 12.18.33 PMOver at The ByteBlog, Seamus Byrne and Co have been busy hauling a bunch of iPhones around the greater Sydney area using speedtest to chart their results, which are not too surprising, though there’s some devil in the detail.

They put four iPhones to work testing the big four: Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and Three, running 150 individual speed tests in locations from Manly to Homebush, Annandale to North Sydney, and points in between.

The outcome?

Telstra blows away the competition with speeds almost double the next best network, while the best value data network Three delivered the slowest results. Indeed, Three’s best single result was slower than Telstra’s average.

Whether you’re just curious or need to confirm what you may already know about your chosen carrier, you can read the full report and download an Excel spreadsheet detailing the speedtest results here: The ByteBlog.

If you’ve conducted your own testing and it confirms or conflicts with those obtained by Seamus and his team, we’d love to hear about it in the comments.

The sample size for optus was only 110, while the rest were around 150…

Still, it’s a good representation of each network.

It’s not surprising that Telstra is the fastest. I just don’t have enough children to offer in payment of their data plans.

We had a silly data record error that meant we lost the first chunk of Optus data.

While it’s not hard data like the rest, the experience with Optus on the first day was very similar to day two. There were actually more data failures, if anything.

But the test data does generally speak for itself pretty well, we think.

I’m on wifi most of the time but when I am out and about Telstra is the only way to go for data speed and coverage on their next g network. I have a $10 data pack with 150Mb and have exceeded it maybe once in 6 months. Keeping in mind that Telstra don’t allow tethering your iphone as a modem yet. Maybe when they do I’ll change my tune about data allowances.
