Stunning Shanghai Corporate Pavilion Made From Used CD Cases
With the Shanghai World Expo 2010 fast approaching, architects are jumping in on the “Better City, Better Life” theme with concepts like this Shanghai Corporate Pavilion. The plans include many green features, including a structure made from recycled CD cases.
Technological Detail and Environmental Protection
1. Solar Energy System
The Shanghai Corporate Pavilion features a 1600m2 solar heat-collecting tube on the roof. These solar tube can collect solar energy to produce hot water up to 95°C. Ultra-low temperature power generation techology, a novel way to generate electricity through solar power. The power generated using this technology can be used for both the exposition and for every day.
2. Recycled Plastic materials
Shanghai produces nearly 30 million of waste CDs every year, and only 25% of them are reclaimed and recycled. If these CDs were reclaimed and washed, they could be used to produce polycarbonate granules and manufacture more polycarbonate plastic products. The external facade materials of the Shanghai Corporate Pavilion will use polycarbonate transparent plastic tubes to create its dreamlike appearance. After the Expo, also plastic tubes can be easily recycled to reduce social wastage.3. Water/mist System
For the Shanghai Corporate pavilion, rainwater will be collected and recycled. After such treatment as sedimentation, filtration and storage, rainwater can be used for daily purposes at the pavilion and for the “mist” in particular. The mist can lower the temperature, purify the air and create a comfortable climate in pavilion. The spray can also be used to form various patterns under ceiling of entrance hall and make the overall appearance of the Shanghai Corporate Pavilion fresh and elegant.

@bnetter12: as in i don't use cd cases anymore
Great. The first building that'll crack when you touch it.

@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M: It's just a shame that lots of people tend to forget/ignore/or simply be unaware of some of the suffering that could be behind some of these pretty glittery buildings.

@nemein:
No I was not trying to be funny and it was the opposite of ignorant.
@Kaiser-Machead:
I know this sounds and looks beautiful and amazing and super-cool, but after reading the articles Giz posted the strains in Dubai and other Gawker sites talking about the horrors of Beijing, I just hope that the people building this eco-friendly building are treated well by USA and European standards ( amongst other countries that treat their citizens well ).
@nemein: I know right, because China is a veritable mecca for civil liberties. I don't mind being PC, but really now...

@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M: Don't forget tears. Lots and lots of tears.
@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M:
That was possibly the most ignorant thing I read today. If you were trying to be funny - you are not.

This is in line with the rest of the architecture in Shanghai. A lot of is imposing, but you really feel like you've been teleported to the future when you see it. There's an area on the river called The Bund, one side of which is host to buildings that look like space ships, buildings that are one giant video screen, and all sorts of shapes and sizes. Even coming from Chicago it's tough to not be impressed. Of course, you never know the actual building quality inside, and they tend to burn down every so often (ok, that was in Beijing.)

@Kev50027:
EDIT: I'm unsure of whether it's the CDs or the cases. It says CDs in the gray text. It could be both.
My AOL disks found a... use. They make nice coasters, and they also made great Frisbees.
AOL stopped giving me free cases for my CD-Rs pretty early on. Then I just got cardboard sleeves. Although I DID get a fairly nice metal CD case.
RIP AOL CDs. I'll never find a better source of free cases. D:
Plastic CD cases + air rifle = my youth
I'm not seeing anything about used CD cases?
They mention the number of waste CDs Shanghai produces, but they're not saying if the polycarbonate transparent plastic tubes making up the exterior are from recycled CDs either.
Maybe they picked clear CD cases because its easy to clean blood and sweat off of them.....this is in China, right?
How much you wanna bet at least 80% of the CD cases will be from those damn free AOL CDs that were so common back in the day?

All the pretty buildings in the world don't matter if they don;t get the pollution under control. The smog is horrendous.
That's one huge Apple store!

@Weihovah: used? as in past tense I'm not sure if that's right.
@Kris Aubuchon: Yep
Wonder how long it'll be before it's abandoned due to logistical concerns, (translation: when the world press leaves)
JoeKhurr
So the first time I open the door a little nub will break off and I'll have to keep it closed with scotch tape?
Kris Aubuchon
Damn Chinese Trade Shows are the bees knees.
There is nothing even in the same galaxy as this in the US.
Cinephile
But how will they open it?
How long are they going to keep this thing up? Sounds like they are "reusing" the cases, not "recycling" them. It'd be better if they "reduced" their use.
"my sweatshop is made out of Pizza Hut boxes, hooray!"
that sounds scary... my cd cases used to break so easily
Sadly no guest appearances

So THAT'S what happened to all those AOL CDs!

I am reminded somehow of the giant virtual building featured in Snowcrash... I know, that one was black and featureless, but this somehow still brought it to mind...
