I hope that is just the speed display instead of a calculation.

It would totally mess me up if I drove past one, seeing me going 49 in a 45 zone and the display saying 4 day jail fine. Thinking it was a speed display and it showing that I was going 4mph.

Is that 46 MPH? Or 46 + 25 (speed limit) MPH? because if it's 46, it will show me 00 days in hospital, I drive at 100mph on road most of the time.

@farker: So by that logic, the only thing to do is stop in front of the sign. Otherwise you'd be spending a minimum of 1 day in the hospital and $1,000. Which still sucks.
This could create some traffic issues.

this is a neat idea, thought giz reported this a while ago. But I think the kid crying blood is more effective. Now I understand it's more for when it rains and the water triggers the blood, but I'm sure someone can come up with one that freaks you out during a sunny blue skied day.

I've often found myself frustrated with overly-cautious drivers and baffled at speed limits. I just didn't understand their logic. Only recently did I realize that people expect to LIVE through car accidents. Maybe it comes from riding a motorcycle for so many years but I thoroughly expect to be killed if ever in a highway (or any full-speed) accident. Call it morbid if you will, but I think i prefer my pre-revelation mindset. In old my world, driving required one's full attention and dedication but a speed limit on a pedestrian/interchange-free stretch of road didn't make any sense, so I usually arrived before my GPS had originally guessed.

aw, crap. i have to drive through elm grove tomorrow. plus, i own multiple cell phones. i am so going to crash in a multiple ditches. hopefully i'll take out one of those damn signs, making my demise productive. seriously, though. three phones. three ditches. even if i survive, my car will be fucked up. then i'll be a handicapped bloke, riding the bus and looking for a pay-phone.

elm grove is a tiny, dumb little burb, containing several freshly-paved semi-rural roads that seem like they should be 45mph zones, at least. but, all 25. and a cop shooting radar covertly every fucking mile or so.

I can find him, he'll be walking down the side walk at a rough 2MPH and I can run him down and disprove his $2,000 in accident bills and 2 days in the hospital.

oh man...in high school we used to see who could get the "highest score" on these things.

I prefer the sign that suddenly changes to , YOUR TOO FAST, SLOW DOWN
that way your not tipping off nearby motorists what your actually doing :p They often put these bill boards up before construction work indicating the new speed limit, and duration of construction.

There is a well researched S-curve for how injured a pedestrian will be based on the speed he or she is hit at. I would suspect that the sign is taking that and calculating the days to recover from that injury. Too bad it doesn't give, after a certain speed, a response of "DEAD".
