Sony Ericsson Aino Is One Part PSP, Every Other Part Sony Ericsson

10:44PM September 2, 2009 | Mark Wilson

The PSP Phone has become a phantom of the industry, a “does it really exist” product of perpetual rumour/intrigue. Now Sony Ericsson has released something close called the Aino, a touchscreen slider that can connect to the PS3.

So what do you get out of this connection? Remote Play—some of it, at least.

While the PSP can stream PS1 classics, a handful PS3 titles and videos when connected to the PS3, the Aino will support videos…and that’s it. Of course, you can check out the PS3′s XMB, too, but you won’t be able to do much other than look at it

Otherwise, the Aino is a fairly typical, nice touchscreen slider, save for its 8MP camera with face detection. But most probably, those faces will be frowning when they hear that your “PSP Phone” can’t actually play games. The Aino drops this October in the UK with the rest of Europe to follow, but we’ll let the legend of the PSP Phone live on until Sony Ericsson strikes again. [PlayStation EU via Joystiq]

Well, these are at least first steps taken by Sony Ericsson to bring out a phone with PSP functionalities. One would almost say that it would be easier to add GSM functions to the PSP. There are also rumours that Sony is not willing to share it’s popular Playstation brand with Ericsson which might explain why it is taking so long for the PSP phone to appear.
