There are a heap of third party options that allow you to monitor your call and data usage in real time, but today Optus has moved to crush them like this thing crushes cars thanks to their free app.
The ‘My Account’ app is available from the app store now as a free download. It will let post-paid customers view their unbilled usage for eligible iPhone plans, view their last four bills, or pay their bill by credit card. Pre paid customers also get the option to view their balance, view up to 100 of their most recent transactions or recharge their account via credit card or recharge voucher.
The app also doesn’t count towards your data cap when you use it on the Optus network (as opposed to overseas), which is something the other 3rd party options can’t offer.

How long until we see:
Report Permalinka) Telstra/Vodafone/3 play catch up with a similar app for their iphones? A: Soon hopefully.
b) Telstra have a similar app for home phone. A: Never?
c) Electricity/gas companies doing the same. A: Maybe? Hopefully? (Would be great to monitor usage day to day!)

a) I don’t see Telstra doing this anytime soon (unfortunately). Given their “we can’t brand this Telstra so we don’t care about it” attitude towards the iPhone.
Report PermalinkOr maybe they will see it as a new source of revenue and charge users an insane amount of money for an app that should be free (and then charge you for the data access on top of that).

Good work Optus, and hopefully the others follow suit.
As a snarky aside though – does it measure data you didn’t download, or phone calls you couldn’t make, because their network was a piece of garbage? Is there an app for that?

It isn’t showing the “current data usage” bit that is shown in the article on my iphone.
Is there something wrong?
