iPod Classic And Shuffle Get Modest Storage, Colour Adjustments

The old standbys of the iPod line, the iPod Classic, got bumped up to 160GB for the same old price of $US250. The Shuffles are now at $US59 for 2GB and come in black, silver, pink, green and blue. They’re all shipping today. Updated.

Update: The Special Edition version comes only in 4GB, and it being polished stainless steel, weights a bit more. Phil Schiller, in an interview with Brian, said that the process for doing the special edition in stainless steel was different than the aluminium models. It costs AU$30 more. The heft of the special edition makes it feel more special, said Brian. But I’m not sure if it’s AU$30 more special.

@Mariana Schneider: I hate to sound like a snob, especially after yesterday's Flickr clusterfrak. I just never caught on using an iPod, or any other device as a video player. I can't really watch video on a 1 x 2 inch screen.

  • BobFraggle

Well I guess I will be getting a new iPod this year after all. Here I thought I was going to have to go through other channels to get a 160GB model and Jobsus goes and drops this new(?) one on us. My 40GB Photo will finally be retired. I hope that the new one will be as reliable and rugged at the ole 40.

    @Diddle my Skittles:

I do. I have an older 160GB Classic and I have 30GB worth of video and around 90GB worth of music at 320kbs. With ample room to put new tunes on it. The touch has never interested me because its way too expensive, i dont play games and I want to take ALL my music with me.

  • Mariana Schneider

@Diddle my Skittles: but then there's video, right? and can't you use it as an external drive too?

    Mariana Schneider

  • Diddle my Skittles

@superberg: Better question is, who has 160GB worth of music? Even at 320kb/s, you'd have to have a massive library of music to get anywhere near that.

  • teohhanhui

iPod Classic should be $249 [cache.gizmodo.com]

@OMG! Ponies!: sarcasm lost on the masses. haha.

but seriously, what kind of announcement is this? we'll give you something that used to be available and put on a big event to tell you about it.

  • appletoad

@OMG! Ponies!: I guess I am the only person who got it.

  • blash

@OMG! Ponies!: Wow I guess nobody else gets your sarcasm, huh?

I have one of the older 160 GB - picked it up on eBay for under $200. The fact that I still essentially have the best iPod classic ever made is pretty indicative that Infinite Loop is feeling a creativity crunch.

  • Dafrety

@OMG! Ponies!: Uhh, yeah, they did. I had one in fact. They sold it along with the 80 GB.

  • ShikhaHaphiliate

    Um, I own a 160GB. Dumbass.

  • vinylsaurus

Any new interface love on the classic? Genius maybe?

  • LysanderBalbus

@OMG! Ponies!: Really? Then why does my 1.5-year-old iPod Classic tell me that it has 160 GB of storage? Is it lying?

    LysanderBalbus

  • matt_mcmhn

Dammit I was really hoping for a 200GB Classic

    matt_mcmhn

  • Eruanno

@superberg: Hey, I remember that too.

  • superberg

@OMG! Ponies!: Actually... there was a 160 GB iPod Classic. Before the 120, there was an 80 and a 160. They compromised on the 120 because they said the 160 wasn't selling well enough.

  • StanleyKlinger

    @OMG? Ponies!:
Apple actually did have a 160gb Classic. They used to come in 80gb and 160gb, then they released the 120 and discontinued the other two.

  • ChaunceyAlcmaeon

Never? Really? Because my vintage 2007 160GB iPod Classic says different(ly).

  • GiacobbeGrimlock

Except that there was a 160GB Classic previously. I just sold mine last week. It was riddled with issues and therefore discontinued a year or so ago.

    Looks like a cigarette lighter.

  • OMG! Ponies!

What are you talking about, Frooch? Apple never had a 160GB classic. 120 GB has ALWAYS been the largest capacity. This classic is something new.

Sheesh - does Gizmodo ever fact-check?

  • masshuum

    @zmnatz: LEGAL, music?

Anyways, kidding aside, it is easy to have music eat up space. Lossless formats are superior and love them some space.

    masshuum

  • zmnatz

@Diddle my Skittles: Um, I actually know a couple people with 160 GB classics filled to the brim with music.

  • zmnatz

@George P. Burdell: Sounds like apple to me.

  • quayzar

    @Diddle my Skittles: Video maybe?

  • someToast

@blash: We should get together for beers. I have a 160GB and fully agree.

  • someToast

@GiacobbeGrimlock: The issues it was "riddled" with was that people weren't buying them in anywhere near the numbers of the smaller models and it was discontinued.

  • xblindx

    YAWN.

WhereTF is my 32GB NANO APPLE?!

    xblindx

  • whatne1wuddo

@masshuum: I'd bet that most people with 160 GB of music don't know half the shit on there, let alone like it. They'd fail miserably at that music quiz game they had on the 5G (Don't know if it's on the classics- i assume so)

  • OMG! Ponies!

Joke's over. I know all about the 160GB classic, having had two in my apartment with dud power connectors. My ex-gf's 160GB broke almost exactly a year ago.

I won't ever buy a classic. They were unreliable hunks of junk then and I have no reason not to believe the classic iPod classic won't also be a dud.

  • someToast

@masshuum: I've 113 GB of legal music on mine, yes. Most 160kbps, but started ripping at 192 a couple years ago.

  • Sean Scrooby Grube

@someToast: I wish I had $10,000 just for songs on my iPod, or however much it costs at a dollar song.

    Sean Scrooby Grube

  • Sean Scrooby Grube

@someToast: Good point. Remember when we used to make mix tapes? Having 1 tape recorder sit infront of another tape player playing radio, hoping for your favorite song to come on, and then hitting record.. and making sure everyone stays REALLY QUIET. Imagine if you had to pay for that. That's how I feel about paying for mp3's. (I do buy CD's still, and rip them).

    Sean Scrooby Grube

  • someToast

@Sean Scrooby Grube: CDs + paid downloads + 24 years.

Hell, cable TV is way more than that per year.

  • cloudnine

@OMG! Ponies!: Weird, I have a 160gb that I've had since the day they were released, and it's still holding up perfectly.

Try not throwing your iPods against the wall, and they should hold up just fine :D

    cloudnine

  • Bababoof is amazing

Wait...I got an iPod classic 80 GB in 2007 and there also was a 160 GB one...then my friend got a 120 GB one for Christmas 2008 since they were the only ones available...WTF

    Bababoof is amazing

  • Four-banger? I hardly knew her!

@quayzar: I've got the old 160GB Classic, it also makes a good external hard drive. It combines two devices in one!
