High-Tech Carbon Fiber Desk Looks Light As A Feather

Carbon fibre is showing up in everything these days—from bikes to toilets. I can’t say I’ve always been a fan of the look, but this Hexa Desk is certainly an exception.

Besides, it’s cool future-y look, it seems like it would be as light as a feather without the glass surface. Given that my desk probably weighs a ton, I could probably use something like this. Unfortunately, it’s probably well outside of most price ranges. [Nurus via LimitedHype via DVICE]

@SumitraPaetus: OK, I looked at your web page. That's a very nice table. While your comment was a bit self promotional, you were on topic. My apologies.

I checked this site and the source, and the other site, and still no dimensions on the table given at all.

    ugh.. _-_'

@dickrhee: Forget about that, how do you hide the mistress underneath the desk?

"form" is supposed to follow "function". in this case, they stopped after "form".

@_Rand_: I just helped my brother move from his old house to a new apartment at college...I wish so badly he didn't have a freakin solid wood coffee table.

  • Xeno

@dingus: LOL! Next time I see him at the gym I'll tell him you said so.

  • Alchemistmerlin

I miss big ornate wood desks with carvings. The sort of desk my grandfather would sit at and write angry letters to the paper from. This thing may be light and high-tech, but it's far from imposing.

But where do you hide your boogers if your desk has a translucent top?

Nice looking desk, but it is going to look like crap once you add phones, computers, paper etc. , all with their messy cables and such.

Great if you have a laptop and cellphone that you charge elsewhere I suppose, but as is it doesn't appear to have any practical way to hide ugly cabling. What it needs is integrated cabling to a small shelf under the main work surface with integrated power to plug in a few power adapters to minimize dangling cords.

but what does its weight matter?

Beyond the first time you bring your desk in how often do you move it? Once every year or two, if ever?

In fact, I think it would be detrimental, imagine getting up from your desk, pushing yourself and your chair back a bit, and shifting the desk every time.

  • _Rand_

I see a few problems with this.

First of all, it looks great sitting there with a just a chair but once you start adding cords, cables, papers, phones etc. its going to look a lot worse. What i needs is a built in channel or two and a shelf underneath to put a few power adapters so you can charge things without having cables dangling all over the place.

Second of all, what does it matter if its light? It's a desk. Once you get it into place you're going to move it what, once every few years?

In fact, I would think being light will be detrimental. Most people would, I think, push back from their desk when getting up, which won't do you much good if the desk slides away form you.

Can it hold the weight of both me and my secretary? I mean, at the very least it should considering it won't be able to hide her.

    Agree with superhappyfuntime:

This is the type of furniture that looks fantastic when you don't actually have anything on your desk...

...and looks kind of cheap & insubstantial when your desk is actually covered with papers, phone, in/out trays, monitor, computer cables, power cords, etc.

It's furniture design without common sense.

The kind of desk I would have talked myself into buying when I was a freshman in college, before I realized that this will only end up looking the same as a $50 all glass desk, once its loaded.

I'll give you $5 dollars for it!

Nice renders. Good luck molding that.

  • Bos'un's Mate

@AmphetamineCrown: Well I disagree! I believe a nice hinging action could be had if activities commence from the secretary's side. Should we ask the editors over at Fleshbot to investigate?

  • AmphetamineCrown

@Bos'un's Mate: That was my first thought too, then I saw the vertical supports on the chair side. Sorry, no bouncy.

@anexanhume: BS. Carrot Top has no soul, so he never casts a reflection.

I can picture Emperor Palpatine on the one side of the desk now...

"So, tell me why the Empire should hire you..."

  • Bos'un's Mate

I bet it gives a nice oscillatory bounce when shagging the secretary.

  • anexanhume

@TheCrudMan: Oh, you misunderstood. Only stuntmans won't cause it to shatter, simply because the glass is a little cranky and remiss to comply with demands.

  • TheCrudMan

    @anexanhume:
So I guess we've found a solution to the "in the future you'd think they could make a table that doesn't shatter when you throw a guy at it" problem that has bugged Star Trek fans, or at least me and my dad, for ages.

The problem with desks this nice, is what do you do with it? I mean, you could use it just for writing and reading, keeping everything off it, and that's fine, but thinking realistically, what happens when you throw a computer on it, and then piles of papers? It won't look so nice.

Now here's an idea. make those hex supports hollow, and maybe even pre-wire one of them with a standard (black) extension cord. That way, you could go the Applie iMac simplicity route, and plug the computer into the desk, and have everything else be wireless. That would look nice. I'd use a Dell though, Apple's brushed aluminum wouldn't go well with Carbon Fibre.

  • TonyRockyHorror

i don't want a light, airy desk. i want big, solid, sturdy, and strong.

    fantastic.
I wonder if this assembles like ikea furniture.

    Stiff as a board?

    alowishus finally has his Miata

  • anexanhume

@TheCrudMan: No, merely sitting on top of carbon fiber imbues the glass with special properties. For instance, Carrot Top will cast no reflection in it.

  • TheCrudMan

But will it shatter when you throw a stuntman into it?
