First Windows Mobile 6.5 Phones Descend On October 6

The best part about this post on the Windows Team blog announcing that Windows Mobile 6.5 phones officially land on October 6?

“Interestingly enough, we discovered that most people who carry a Windows phone don’t realise it’s running Windows Mobile.”

Well. I’ll just leave it at that. Except to wonder precisely which Windows Mobile 6.5 phones we’ll see landing on October 6, and um, when, dear god, will we see Windows Mobile 7? And please tell me they’ve come up with a better plan than this. [Windows Team]

    @DustyButtâ„¢: I've been running 6.5 betas on my Samsung Omnia for a while, along with SPB Mobile Shell 3. It's been *very* stable, and a joy to use. The Omnia is a great phone. Can't wait to see the new Omnia II...hi-res OLED display!

    The nice thing is i've been on winmo for so long, a lot of apps i bought YEARS ago just keep getting updated and i can keep using the original purchase licenses and download the updates. Whenever I get a new phone, i just reload the latest version of my favorite apps.

    @Kerensky97:
    I can't think of any of my critical apps that I ran on 6.1 that didn't work on 6.5. The ones that fell by the wayside were actually replaced or no longer necessary in 6.5. can you name some specific programs that didn't work right for you?

    @mk3:
    Nope, just enjoying the most versatile and widely supported mobile OS out there.

    Oh yeah and asking mu friends with iPhones why they never respond to my MMS or why they can't send that video over Bluetooth. At least they are catching up with the feature set of free phones! =)

  • jamjen

    @danaross: Yeah same interface, and I love it. Also the interface in media center

    Who gives a crap. If you are still on a Windows based phone, you must still be beating your head against a wall. What a waste of time.

    @DustyButtâ„¢: Well, I should qualify: Never crashed when there was sufficient RAM free. Which as you know is a trick on the Mogul (64 MB. Psh.).

    @Kerensky97: You really need to download the OS from HTC for you phone when and if it becomes available.
    The problem with running a beta is that is not hardware specific and it might not be taylored just right.

    I actually put on a 6.5 OS into my Fuze over the weekend and didn't like it.

    The OS was faster and and the interface was nice but all the software built for 6.1 had problems using the new "touch friendly" interfaces. Large menus were made ALOT bigger and became unwieldy, and some checkbox menus didn't want to work anymore and were less finger friendly.

    I can't complain too much as I was using alot of 6.1 (and earlier) software on a 6.5 unsupported beta build. But I hope Microsoft puts alot more thought into backwards compatibility or they're going to kill a vast amount of the 3rd party programs that make the OS as versatile as it is.

    As for now I'm reverting to 6.1 till they the bugs work out.

  • danaross

    Very pretty. I love the Zune interface.

  • spec24

    another Marketplace from Microsoft. I wonder if it will be just as good as the music store they had before they brought out the Zune, you know - the one they shut down and in essence made the songs you purchased from that service unplayable. MS can suck mine. Go blow, Bill.

    @Fractal the Meek: I switched from my Mogul last january because it did crash ALOT.

    But, you know the one thing I haven't heard about since the last group of WM phones came out in Europe(TP2, TD2, etc.) a few months ago? ...Not even a peep about excessive crashing. As a matter of fact, any crashing at all. Bugginess and crashing was the biggest flaw with WM, a close second was the GUI. Man, that was an ugly GUI.

    I think WM is to the point where hacking to smooth out bugginess is over, I really do.

    I'm really looking forward to a phone that can do whatever I want right out of the box. I know I'm one of the few but I miss my WinMo phone. (I didn't miss the crashing though!)

    @avconsumer2: Yeah, I used to do a little bit with my Mogul, until I moved to the iPhone last January.

    @aerospaceman & @Jesustron:
    I tried it once but I didn't really have any games. I think I tried either Hocus Pocus or Jill of the Jungle with no luck.

    There IS a port of an open source Warcraft II engine though (ported by the same guy):

    @DustyButtâ„¢: lol - indeed. Gratz buddy. Head over to XDA developers website if you enjoy tinkering.

  • avconsumer2

    @pirates21: they must be pretty proud of that gui. Hope it rocks as much as they tout.

  • avconsumer2

    @Fractal the Meek: That's quite rare. My HTC Fuze was a different phone after my XDA ROM flash. I was sorely disappointed upon purchase - sluggish as hell, bloatware out the wazoo, etc... now it's a lean mean smartphone machine. Love it.

  • Fractal the Meek

    @Jesustron, Now with more beer!: Or a NES/SNES emulator. Love me some Kirby.

  • Fractal the Meek

    @badasscat: Yeah, but as one who's tortured his Mogul with ROM flashes, it really isn't the same as a well done official upgrade.

    The last upgrade from Sprint/HTC for the Mogul made everything about the phone faster and more stable in the long run than any of the XDA ROMS, imho.

  • badasscat

    @damiththa: XDA developers probably have you covered :)

  • DustyButtâ„¢

    It's so odd how little interest this generates here! Ha!

    Well I'm ready for it! My iPhone is gone in 7 days, my friends! Woooo!

    Soooo close.

    that looks a lot like the zune hd

  • damiththa

    an free upgrade to 6.5 would be great

    damiththa

  • Jesustron

    @aerospaceman:

    Or you could just port dosbox? which is probably already done.

  • aerospaceman

    I wonder how hard it would be to port old DOS games to WinMo...people did it for a few popular titles for Windows CE, but if companies could license their old titles...would be freaking awesome to have old classics like UFO on your phone.

  • bustedchain

    @Geraldo: And non-WinMo users will probably never realize that you don't have to *BUY* apps for it....as there are tons of useful apps, games, and stuff FREELY available for WinMo. If you do buy apps, there are tons of handy sites that have huge libraries of content.

    bustedchain

  • Geraldo

    And WinMo users will probably never realize you can buy apps for it either ;-)
