Very cool, but it's insanely lame that they had to ditch BASIC. It's not like you've got the IO resources built-in to BASIC to do anything troubling.

Well you can still get to basic in this.
Just run one of the games and then press the reset button on the c64 keyboard and it will drop back to full basic.

10 print "hello world"
20 GOTO 10

It works :)

Well, It was in the Ireland App store last night. And it looks like its gone now. Ok Cydia type people, We need a c64 emulator. I purchased a couple of emu's from Cydia and would do the same for a proper c64 emu.

And its apparently pulled again because they did leave the BASIC interpreter in there accessible trough an up up down down left right kinda code.

They did already resubmit the app with the interpreter really removed. So check back in a few weeks.

@Scotland: They pulled the app - doing the Konami code would spawn a BASIC interpreter.

@supasamurai: No, Giz waited so long to post this that the next development in the soap opera has taken place. The BASIC interpreter was still in the app and appeared after entering the Konami code. . . . Apple yanked it.

@trevisol: That's kind of awesome. (The BASIC interpreter being called up with the Konami code, not the yanking).

I am holding out for the Commodore Plus/4 emulator, myself.

Okay, I have to admit that when this thing becomes available (permanently) I will have to buy an iPod Touch to get this. Sure, an absolute waste of money to run C64 games, but somehow still priceless. Get it together, Manomio!

@Serolf Divad: It could also be a fun (or at least different) exercise for beginning programming classes--develop your own widgets.

@Retroman: I don't remember which, but when I was a kid, we used to get a monthly kids magazine that had a different kid-written BASIC program. My sister and I would spend hours entering the code, which we could rarely get to work because we hadn't learned the importance of error-free data entry yet. MEM'RIEEEEEES.

Just tried the standard LOAD"*",8,1 then typed RUN. Just loads up Jack Attack.

Can't wait until they get more titles.

@smirkette: No doubt it's awesome. I can't imagine what harm a BASIC interpreter could've done, the app would still have been sandboxed in the confines of the SDK. It's not like you could run sshd or anything.

It's a novelty more than anything, and just shows how stupid Apple's choice to clone Machiavelli and put him in charge of App Store approvals was.

Apparently Apple has some BASIC issues with Easter Eggs on the Jesus phone. Who'da thunk it?

@Mr_Biggles: You know it's a DS emulator. Not a DS game emulator.
The games included with it aren't DS games.

If they're worried about using Microsoft software on Apple products, they obviously don't know that Commodore BASIC was wholly owned by Commodore--the only time Mr. Bill ever sold a version of it. Since Commodore's long gone, there's no one to sue Apple.
