Apple May Activate High Definition Video Playback In iPhone, iPod

This one wasn’t in our guide to Apple’s Rock and Roll event rumours, but Harman Kardon may have spilt the beans. According to this press release, the iPod and iPhone can indeed play high definition video, as previously discovered:

Each receiver takes advantage of the latest sound and video technologies — such as the latest high-bit-rate formats, including Dolby(R) TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio(TM) delivered via Blu-ray Disc(TM) and the HD video content stored on iPod and iPhone products — and incorporates them into a beautifully designed, easy-to-use system.

Could this mean that Apple will announce this capability in today’s event? Perhaps it is related to the Cocktail project? [MarketWatch]

I DON’T CARE! it can’t play it in HD cause of the screen res. I have plenty of other ways of getting HD content to thing that CAN take advantage of it, and the limited amount of space in the iphone/touch means that this is really something i do not want!

I can see a benefit in the iPhone and iPod touch being able to play high def movies. It would mean that you wouldn’t have to re-encode everything just to play it on your iPhone or iPod touch.

It would be awesome if the iPhone and iPod touch could down-scale a high def video on the fly to fit the screen resolution. High def videos will take up extra space, but as the capacity of iPhones and iPod touches increase this becomes less of a problem.
