Would You Pay $US200 For TomTom’s iPhone Car Kit?

We’ve been waiting for the supposed Summer launch of TomTom’s turn-by-turn iPhone app and car kit ever since we saw it at WWDC. Now one UK retailer looks to be taking pre-orders for £113.85 (about $US195).

I wouldn’t take Handtec’s pricing as gospel—they seem to have jumped the gun after all—but it does give some insight into what we might expect.

The listed price is a little higher than basic stand alone units cost, but includes the iPhone app itself, along with the GPS-boosting car accessory—complete with windscreen mount, in-car charger, speakers, and hands-free rig. And as we’ve mentioned in the past, it’s not inconceivable that the kit will also support the iPod Touch.

Of course, it still remains to be seen if TomTom will bleed users dry with a monthly subscription, or go the one off charge route that CoPilot Live took in the UK. [Handtec via Daniweb via Techmeme]

There’s no freekin’ way I’d pay US$200 for the app + car holder. Maybe US$100 at the most as you are still trying to use a much smaller screen – even though you’ll be mostly relying on the voice prompts.

The best thing about all of these holders (I’m being sarcastic here!) is the fact that 90% of the people I know who have an iPhone have a protective case on it, you know – the sort made to protect a phone…. which means the clip and the connector in the base of the clip are completely useless unless you remove you phone from the case every time you get into the car.

I’ll stick to my google maps thanx. If you get lost, just find your location – how hard is that?!
