Rumoured Canon G11 Specs Reveal Minimal Improvements

8:59AM August 19, 2009 | Rosa Golijan

The specs for the Canon G11 are a bit disheartening. The CMOS sensor we’d hoped for is a no-show, we’re down to 10MP after the G10′s 15MP, mini-HDMI yet no HD video…but look! It has a tilting screen!

How many megapixels does the author really want? Come on, the EOS 1D MkIII has the same megapixel count. Lower pixel density gives better image quality. Jamming too many pixels into a tiny sensor means one thing – NOISE. The G9 and G10 proved it, as does every other tiny high megapixel count camera.

If its true, then maybe Canon will start marketing sensor quality, instead of pushing for more pixels every generation.

I agree with the author on video though. Full HD would be nice.

    Specs unlikely to be true:

small sensor + less Mp = no sense
bigger sensor + less Mp = makes sense

The lack of the tilting screen is why I didn’y buy a recent G model. kudos to Canon for putting it back. Incredibly useful.

whats with this stupid screen thingy……for heavans sake build a camera that’s just innovative hey you did a great job with the G9 …..so no taking your eye of the ball Mr Canon…….my Mk 3 is a great workhorse but I can’t see a reason for the G11 as I am not a dentist I am a photographer.

If the G11 has better noise control, better dynamic range, and better AF, then Canon has won me. I am also hoping that they have improved the accuracy of the OVF. The G10 is a great camera to handle but the extra 5 Mp have not been helpful. For me to change to a G11, the reviews will need to be sparkling.

The major complaint with the G10 was the 15Mp. Everyone was asking for less Mp. I was about to buy a G10, so we’ll have to see where the price goes with this.

It’s not about pixels it’s about noise. if it can go to 1600 and little to no noise I’m buying. A better zoom would be nicer. I have a G5 and liked the quality back then, but now have a Mark II and III and 5D Mark II and am spoiled.

I Completely agree with the author. come on canon, you guys can do better than this. I love canon, and I really wanted to buy this camera, until I learned of it’s limitations. first of all, the lcd. Love the idea. absolutely put the biggest lcd screen you can fit on the camera, but why are you mounting the lcd like it’s a camcorder? My last camera was an olympus C-5060 wide zoom. take note and look hot the lcd was mounted from the top of the camera, it’s a very good place to put the lcd screen. When I’m shooting photos, I like to sometimes hold the camera from one side or the other depending on the shot, I’m a Photojournalist, I take shots in many different angles and from many points of view, I need that lcd on top and to be able to swivel from there. Just copy the c-5060, but of course but a nice 3 inch lcd on there. and High Definition, Why Not? and I’m very unhappy with this old technology ccd you’re using. maybe old is not the best word to use. but CMOS, what all Digital SLR’s are using is truly the way to go. Ok, you subtracted 5 million Pixels, But at least give us the CMOS chip. How long do I have to wait, Canon? And yes, I’m willing to pay more money for the camera. I paid $700 Dollars for my Olympus c-5060 when it came out, and I’m wiling to pay a good Thousand for a G11+. did you see the +. yes, make it and it will sell. I’ll buy one the day they ship, and every photojournalist and aspiring photographer will buy one as part of their collection. I’ll even buy Two of them.
