OOOh, an iPod Touch TomTom would be very nice for non-iPhone owners.

Even though it doesn’t have a build-in GPS receiver?

Apparently the TomTom windscreen mount will have a GPS receiver built in… Allowing the iPod Touch to use GPS functions… Thanks to 3.0′s use of the dock connector for hardware!

So it doesn’t support traffic updates? – That’s a little dissapointing… Hey Nick, any chance of comparing Sygic and TomTom?

TomTom having direct access to contacts is nice… Hmmmmm….

It has normal turn-by-turn voice, but does not have text-to-speech. Apart from that the app appears to be pretty good after a bit of a play. The interface works well. Contact integration is cool

Ryno, did you read the post? CLearly states “voice instructions”.

Also yes it does work without the dock, what would the point of the application be if (as is now) you can’t buy a dock yet? The dock improves GPS accuracy and adds bluetooth, transmission to stereo etc.

May be a silly question, but to anyone that has used it – what exactly is the Data Usage like for the Tom Tom app?

Being with Telstra, they have such a small amount of allowed usage that I’m cautious about picking this up.

I have an iPhone 32GS and Tom Tom from iTunes, $99.00 and I would not have thought it could chew useage as it’s a GPS, but, seems I’m wrong…I have 250MB with three.com.au and I can blow the lot in a few short hours.

I have checked out all the iPhone navigation apps and I am still looking for on that speaks the street names. For example, “In 200 meters turn left on Elm Street.”
Does anyone know if TomTom for iPhone does that?
    Thanks!

      Bob –

I’m doing some work with TomTom – at the moment of launch, the TomTom iPhone app will not be compatible with text-to-speech (i.e., the speaking of street names).

We’re going to continue to incorporate new innovations and technologies – if and when we do implement new features for the TomTom application, we will announce it via press release.

I can tell you the new Tom Tom software is brilliant, compared to mt normal GPS it’s on par, lots of clever goodies in it but as I said before, seems to haber downloan for breakfast/lunch & dinner. At first it was hopeless till I realised the GPS chip was knacked, so even though brand new, I took out the service policy, got a new phone shipped over and compared both phones performance, then sent my old one back, now all GPS apps including maps and Tom Tom hardly miss a beat…….

This is great!! Ever since they demoed the app at WWDC I have been patiently waiting for it. WIth the TomTom app, the iPhone has become THE device in my household. For more on that, check out my blog posting at http://www.therobbrennan.com/journal/2009/8/17/iphone-3gs-tomtom-the-ultimate-mobile-solution.html

@ Bob. I have the Tom Tom for Iphone and the Navigon GPS app both installed side by side of Iphone 3g. To answer a few questions:
    1. Tom Tom does not give street bt street navigation, the Navigon does.
    2. GPS apps do NOT use date allowance from your phone provider, they simply connect to GPS as does any other in-car GPS device.
    3. The navigon has some very good features such as street by street navigation as well as instructing you to take a certain exit of the freeway by name and which lanes to be in.
    4. The Tom Tom has better graphics and in my opinion, easier to use interface. It also has a variey of voices including celebrity voices for those brave enough to upload them to the phone if jailbroken.

Overall, I prefer the Tom Tom because of its simplicity, better graphic and ease of use.
