Samsung Gets In On The App Store Action

Samsung plans to roll-out an app store for its Omnia smartphones, and has signed on the likes of Electronic Arts, Gameloft, Capcom and TAITO to help it expand the 300 launch applications to 2000 by the end of the year.

The store will initially arrive in the UK, France and Italy on September 14. A further 30 European countries will follow, and though Samsung confirmed plans for the Americas and Asia, it hasn’t mentioned any dates.

You’ll also need to have an Omnia or i8910 HD phone, but support is expected to soon also include handsets like the Omnia II and OmniaLITE.

Every man and his dog is doing an app store these days:
• Apple iPhone App Store
• Android App Market
• BlackBerry App World
• Windows mobile Marketplace
• Nokia Ovi Store
• Palm App Catalog
• LG App Store (Asia/Pacific only)

Just another "Me too" moment for Samsung.

    @SewerShark:
If you download a fart app for the Instinct, should you then call it an Instank?

@Slyd3z: Ah, fair enough, then. BREW is a disaster. They made it too expensive for the lone developer and hobbyist to develop for it.

How 'bout releasing the i8190 in the US first?

@sharkync: Henceforth?, it's been that way.

@CSX321: Nope, but I've seen plenty of pics and vids of it. Clearly, WinMo is not a 'pseudo OS', which is why that particular rant wasn't aimed at it. I was mainly griping about the Brew-based concoctions like the Instinct family (of which, I own the original).

I have the Samsung Instict. Where's the f-ing app store for it?

@Slyd3z: You haven't used an Omnia, have you? Although I will grant you that TouchWiz is not worth much. I use SPB Mobile Shell instead.

I'm excited to hear this, because I'm writing a couple of potentially commercial Omnia apps right now. (They will also work on most other WM phones.)

Henceforth, apps make or break a device.

so samsung (not exactly known for there software skills) are releasing an sdk for an operating system that they just stuck a ui on? so i assume this sdk will actually be more lacking than the proper sdk but have a set screen size?

Finally. A pseudo app store to go with their pseudo "smart-ish phones" with their pseudo OS's.

Sansung's Fart Apps will not be nearly as good as iPhone's Fart App
