@deanbmmv: Maybe you should check your PC out. Mine is whisper quiet as is the PS3. The Xbox 360 is a jet engine though, no arguments there.

@fastm3driver: I've been dying to know this for so long! I'm willing to pay for that service along with a new 4x or 6x Blu-disc drive.

That's the older 360's though. The falcon has a 175 watt power supply, and the jasper has 150 watt. It's nice to see it sucking so much less power though.

With a 50% reduction in features.
I wonder if you could get a new 45nm chip and put it into a origional 60Gb unit. Maker dudes and ifixit get on this please.

Now how about a PS3 Slim vs 360 (elite?) vs Wii.. I care a lot more about console vs console then console vs movie player. If I had to guess I'd say the Slim would drain the most, and the Wii would drain the least.

@Akibake-: Pretty much. So to recoup the cost if you wanted to upgrade, it'd take a little more than 8 years or so with energy costs rising.

@appletoad: I just used a laptop where I happened to remember the power consumption off the top of my head. but a 2009 MacBook pro uses comparable power to the 2004... i.e. a lot less than a PS3 slim.

60% reduction in standby mode is probably enough to cut the overall power consumption drastically over course of a year.

@deanbmmv: It occurred to me to try running my 60GB outside of the AV cabinet, and it does appear to run quieter (and probably cooler). It's probably the warmer air in there from the TiVo HD and receiver that's not helpful. I'll probably still end up getting a standalone BR player in the near future.

@Akibake-: Going with the US average of 11.38 Cents/kWh. Playing a game with the 60GB would cost 2.355 Cents/hour and the slim would cost 1.0952 Cents/hour.

And in case you didn't know, a computer is exactly what PS3 is.

@deanbmmv: Hmm, I have the same problem. I wonder if I just need to open the thing up and clean it. I bought my 60GB from a buddy used, and maybe it's all clogged up with dust or something.

@SigmundTheSeaMonster: I know what you mean -- my 60GB is currently also my BR player, but it sounds crazy loud after a few minutes, and I have to keep my AV cabinet door open, otherwise it sounds like there's a hair dryer in there after a while.
I'm thinking of a standalone BR player as well. No complains on the PS3 BR quality though, but the noise and heat is nuts.

@anexanhume: And, incidentally, I believe the 187 watt figure is for the original Xbox 360 as well, before its respective die shrinks of various parts. I don't have any solid numbers but I believe it's somewhere closer to 117 now.

This is a comparision with the first generation Fat unit though...Compare it with the refreshed versions (with smaller fabrication processes) and i think the difference will be minimal.

I have a release 60GB PS3 and yes, that thing is a electricity hog!

@Jstick: i had that same issue with my 60GB before it broke. My current 80GB is whisper quiet when hot.

@anexanhume: Thank you! That's exactly what I was going to say comparing it to the 95nm of course it going to use less then half the power but compared to the more recent 65nm on the fat's it's exactly like sony says 34% come on guys! Your suppose to be a Gadget Blog know your shit!

Yep... uses way too much power for just playing back Blu-ray... 80+ watts is a lot in this tiny little case. Should run pretty hot.

compare that to a powerbook G4 with a 15 inch screen running at absolute peak load is 41 watts.

Unless you love the games, I wouldn't buy it. I just don't see the appeal of this device specifically as a blu-ray player.

@Jstick: Well that's rather rare. The Ps3 is whisper quiet for most. unlike the jet engine used to power the 360 or a PC.
From Kotaku's video reviews n such the Slim is much quieter.

So, my PS3-60G model is great for a space heater!
(once the BluRay players drop to sub $200-$150 range, The PS3 is to be relished as a space heater...)

sorry to ask random ps3 question, but is there any word on the fan of the slim. my fat ps3 sounds like a jet engine if it doesn't have complete open air, and gets very hot.

Electrical engineering is a beautiful thing, no?

Sony claims that their new PS3 Slim uses 34% less power than previous generations. But when Crave compared the original 60GB PS3 to the Slim, they found power savings to be greater than 50%.

This is still accurate, as Sony is comparing to their recent PS3 generation (the ones being phased out now), which sport 65nm cell and 65nm RSX chips. The original fat has 90nm for both.

The Slim has 45nm and 65nm for Cell and RSX, respectively. No word on a 45nm RSX.
