New PS3 Ads Tease Internet Rumours, Lazy Boyfriends
Amazingly enough, Sony’s new U.S PlayStation 3 ads actually make sense, and have a sense of humor. The first spot is a tongue-in-cheek look at pricing rumours (hey!), while the second spruiks the joys of the Interwebs.
Sony’s corp-speak for its campaign is “It Does Everything”. Yeah, it’s got Blu-ray and Wi-Fi—but as Adam noted yesterday—it all depends on your setup. And anyway, the games are what’s important. See: PS3 Slim Vs. Xbox 360 Elite Hardware: Pretty Cut and Dry. [Sony]

I'm confused by the second one. The PS3 has aroma therapy? I guess if you like the smell of electronics and ozone.
bustedchain
Wow, looks like they might be getting a clue! To bad word is it's slower than the original. :(
@Microshock: My response to this is that Sony, as one of the very largest electronics corporations in the world, cannot afford regional marketing arms?
jbuk2k7
Thanks, ender.
@Sir Gibler: Confirmed!
He hates candles too??! Seriously! Whats wrong with him!?
Haroon Piracha
@Sir Gibler: Holy crap, you're right! Geeze, Sony!
@subatomicLaura: I know its Sony but those were pretty good.
streetceltic
@Zukis: I know right
streetceltic
Why doesn't she hook up the ps3 to the internet herself?! COME ON!
subatomicLaura
@Larry13: Actually it says both:
Shorties
@SDEddie: It defiantly says Blu-Ray
Larry13
In the first video the guy looks like Seth Rogan, but has the voice of Jonah Hill. Weird.
Zukis
Hmmm? I'm interested in this "BLUE RAY" which is advertised 0:26 on 2nd commercial?!
Sony now has BLUE RAY?
well its got to be a damn heap better than the original PS3 adds with that crazy hacienda with all the people chucking grenades at suitcases and stuff.
marfin
it doesn't do candles.......Does it?
@Sir Gibler: ROTFLMMFAO good catch!
@rjp: I don't like them. Smelling like a random fruit, spice or extract is just not my thing. I buy unscented everything.
Travis Collins
clever spot
I don't often enjoy watching commercials, but these are absolutely hilarious.
Mad props to Sony on this.
"Come on!"
brandizzle
Who does Linux?
That's like 2% of all PS3 owners.
Go out and get a netbook to tinker on.
Geeesh!

@jbuk2k7: They make it like that because they have to localize and translate most of the ads in Europe. So while in America, you can have funny ad's, it's kind of hard in Europe to get an ad dub of that for everyone
Kudos to Sony marketing department!
Wish to see Microsoft make fun out of RROD in its ads.
Something like... I am a Xbox360 and I wear a LED red ring. :)
(which should go along with their "I am a PC" ad campaign)
Ogami
@rjp: I think they are not based in reality because what girlfriend would buy you a PS3? And what girlfriend would COMPLAIN when you didnt hook it up and play all the time?
VideoVampire
@Palmer74: Im with you my 80GB version has played not only every ps2 game I have put into it but also every ps1 game I have put in. Although the games are so dated its not really that fun to play the ps1 games.
VideoVampire
A smart ad from Sony that makes sense? I'm stunned.
This is how the PS3 should have been marketed to begin with, Oh well these are great commercials.
ReynaldoRiv
Our UK ads are so much worse. Like, seriously, the suck.

"[PlayOn] grants your PS3 access to Netflix Watch Instantly video, Amazon VOD, as well as Hulu, YouTube, CBS, CNN and ESPN videos."
@VideoVampire: I love you too and thanks for the answer!
@OneLetter: Those are the tear jerker movies in HD, like when Old Yeller comes out, it will actually be on "Blue Ray" ;)
VideoVampire
Spruik. What a great word.
@Yuppers: I love you: No. If you wanted one that will play ps2 games you needed to buy the 80gb one that went out of production just over a year ago I beleive. I got one of those when I found out they were gonna stop making them. The bonus is it also has all the card reader slots and plays ps1 games as well.
VideoVampire
@lilaliendog: Removal of the Ps3 stuff was becuase;
a) it pushed up the cost for the console
b) Why throw in PS2 playback for free on the PS3 when they still offer the $99 PS2. Kind am makes business sense. Especially as Ps3 costs them more ot make then sell and the Ps2 is maybe like $30 to make now?
Less Bloggers more Rubiks Cubes!!!
@OneLetter: LOL.
(and I don't LOL here often)
If only more ads were actually funny. The price drop got me to upgrade from my PS2 and I got my PS3 slim from Amazon yesterday. Ooooh, the pictures are pretty.
Hahaha I love the 2nd ad about the lazy boyfriend.. "COME ONN!"
LoneWolf41390
I like how the rumor commercial makes fun of Sony and the blog sites at the same time. good to have a sense of humor.
TT
@Sir Gibler:
Careful, if this gets out, Gizmodo will claim that it's a new feature.
Alex Freauff
I've actually done the count. The difference in exclusives between both systems is pretty much caused by XBLA. They're about even now.
@Sir Gibler:
OneLetter
yup "games are what's important" . The games I like are on the PS3 exclusives and all the other good games are multipat
So please Danny Allen don't go with that stupid 2007 subject.
I did a double-take on the title post... I thought it said "Tase" not "Tease". Important distinction, though the former would amuse me more.
ParisDandradeine
@ArnoldCarmark: It really lets you know he trolls icanhascheezburger and Amazon product revi... OH GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE WITH MY LIFE?
dingus
Don't call it a comeback...I think a great product...managable price...decent commercial = win!
Ski
It doesn't play old PS2 games. Does it? Hmmm..
It's more like having a bathroom without plumbing. I mean COME ON!!!
Good ads. :-)
The dude's shirt is the three wolf kitty shirt... bonus points for being on top of the "memes"
ArnoldCarmark
come onnnnnn
Real funny Sony.
@moop2000: I only agree with the perfume part and some incense smell like B.O.
Candles are cool... Especially to pyros like me...
@chauncy that billups: The baby grew up into that Rumor Monger dude.
26 seconds into the first commercial when it says what the PS3 can do... it has "Blu-Ray" and if you look higher it says "Blue Ray"
@hu_hu_cool: To elaborate on your question because I'm with you on this.
"And anyway, the games are what's important."
You guys are just pure pitiful.
The OP references an article to prove a "point" about game selection. However, the referenced article, just makes a generic statement that XBox has the best game lineup, as if it's the most obvious thing in the world and well-known fact, but doesn't even attempt to back it up. Even Wikipedia has more of a sense of accountability than that about where they get their information.
It's all just a bunch of biased BS instead of just giving us news and facts. There's nothing wrong with making jokes or what not, but it's rather annoying to read an article half full of subjective opinions.
@rjp: I dislike aroma therapy candles, I can't stand the smell, and they trigger my asthma (so do incense, and perfume)!
moop2000
@Palmer74: Not officially, if someone can hack the PS3 it'll be as easy as ever, and faster, as Linux doesn't have access to the full CPU or GPU IIRC
@mangochutney: I have to agree with you , I was wondering WTF Sony were doing with the PS3 Ads, but these more than make up for them.
Thanks for restoring my faith in the advertising industry Sony!
These ads were really funny.
Where's the crying baby? WHERE IS IT??
chauncy that billups
@lilaliendog: kind of, there was an interview awhile back where someone from sony said it wasnt a cost thing why they took it out
THOSE WERE HILARIOUS!
Oh man I was laughing out loud at work, hahahaha
Kudos Sony, kudos
M3tALHaz3
Was that Gizmodo on his monitor in the background?

@ViewtifulJason: Removal of this feature was due to the consumers bitching about cost.
lilaliendog
@Palmer74: not the ps3's issue, hulu explained why it (hulu) will not allow some content to play on the ps3 directly.
Netflix streaming can be solved in this way, [gizmodo.com]
lilaliendog
@ViewtifulJason: I have a launch 60 gig, it has played every PS2 game I have ever put in it. So sorry I do not agree.
Palmer74
@Palmer74: Don't forget PS2 compatibility.
ViewtifulJason
It doesn't do linux.
What better games does the xbox have?
Those were pretty good, it's about time Sony stepped up their advertising game.
PS3 it does EVERYTHING. (except hulu and netflix)
Palmer74
ok ill give you this one sony, those were clever and somewhat funny..
These are very creative. They're not based in reality, though, because no one dislikes aroma therapy candles.
